Topic: Hugh Lloyd

  LLOYD
Lloyd based his investigations on the proposition that Robert and Thomas Lloyd were cousins, either first or second, or by marriage, to Robert Owen who removed from near Bala, Merionethshire, Wales, to Merion in the Province of Pennsylvania, in 1690, and died in 1697.
Lloyd, in an elaborate argument, states to be so; but recent investigations prove that Robert Lloyd was born on a farm adjoining Fron Goch, the birth place of Robert Owen, to whom he was related in several ways, and was baptized at Llanfor, near Bala, 14 January, 1667 (1667-8), and was son of Thomas Lloyd.--EDITOR.
Hugh Lloyd was one of the Deputies to the Provincial Convention held at Philadelphia, July 15th, 1774.

The Family Tree begins with John Lloyd of Brynnant, believed to be a farm near Llandewi Ystradenni, however the link between John Lloyd of Brynnant and Hugh Lloyd of Baynham Hall is speculative rather than confirmed.
It is certainly feasible that John, at the age of 45, fathered Hugh, though for the moment I am unable to prove that connection.
However, I have uncovered evidence of a sizeable population of Lloyds living in and around Llandewi Ystradenni in the 1600s, almost certainly related, although the evidence is, so far, only circumstantial.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2006.05.33
This, the third volume of Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones' collected papers, is a fascinatingly bizarre publishing venture, even within the genre of Kleineschriften.
To understand this phenomenon, we would have to enter the sociology of the field of classics, and, most pertinently, the local history of Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones as gatekeeper (and boundary warrior) of a particular style of traditional scholarship--a lustily enacted role, where the review, like his position as Regius Professor, had a particular function.
Just as, year in year out, this reviewing output was fighting a personal war for the soul of classics, so the volume of collected reviews may be making a final symbolic political gesture, (a history of) his policing of the field of (real) classics.
