Llullaillaco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Llullaillaco is a stratovolcano at the border of Argentina (province of Salta) and Chile.
Llullaillaco is the second highest active volcano in the world, surpassed only by Ojos del Salado.
Llullaillaco follows the typical Puna de Atacama volcano pattern: it is surrounded by large debris fields, and is perpetually capped by snow and small glaciers despite the extreme dry conditions of the region.

Enjoy Chile Nature - National Park in Llullaillaco Chile
A gigantic volcano, families of guanacos and vicuñas sharing the same space, and an impacting sierra setting, are just a trio of descriptive strokes regarding the 268670 hectares of the Llullaillaco National Park, an awesome corner in the Andes, in the II Antofagasta Region.
In spite of the ample variety of wildlife thriving within this protected area, it stands out for the high density of guanacos (Lama guanicoe) and vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) it houses, being the only place where both South American cameloids coexist on the same ecological floor.
This Park has no installations for tourist purposes; however, it is very well attended by groups of mountaineers seeking to crown the majestic Llullaillaco, which is the second highest volcanic summit in Chile with its 6739 metres of altitude.

Global Volcanism Program | Frequently Asked Questions | What is the world's highest volcano?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The highest volcano with documented historical eruptions is Llullaillaco, which had three in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
Active fumaroles, however, mark the summit crater of Nevados Ojos del Salado, 267 km to the south and 148 m higher than Llullaillaco.
The youthful nature of Nevados Ojos del Salado suggests that its lack of historical eruptions stems only from its remote location, and it is rightfully the world's highest volcano.
