Lo'ihi Underwater Volcanic Vent Mission Probe
An instrumented underwater probe, built at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, to examine deep, hydrothermal vents at the Lo'ihi Seamount, 27 km (20 miles) east of the Big Island of Hawaii at a depth of about 1,300 meters (4,250 ft).
A long-term objective of JPL engineers is to develop instruments for a probe that could be used to search for life in the underground oceans that may exist on Jupiter's moons, Europa and Callisto.
On Oct. 17, 1998, a submersible from the University of Hawaii took the 52-kg (115-lb) probe down to the Lo'ihi Seamount.

When one follows this chain of seamounts northwest from Hawaii, the increase in age (and erosion) continues: Laysan - 19.9 million years; Midway - 27.7 million years; Suiko (near Japan) - 59.6 million years, see
The ages are explained well if the volcanoes were formed as the Pacific Plate passed over a hot spot; the hot spot that is currently forming the Loihi Seamount off the southeast coast of Hawaii (the only part of the chain with active volcanoes).
Assuming only that plate velocities are similar to the rates measured today (and in Hawaii it's about ten cm per year), one would expect to see a volcano that formed 27 million years ago to have moved 2700 km from the hot spot.
