Lo Fidelity Allstars Biography - AOL Music
A six-piece big-beat band with more of a rock'n'roll slant than the other acts on the big-beat boutique Skint Records, Lo Fidelity Allstars marry rumbling dub basslines with breakdown-organ riffs borrowed from soul tunes and a care-free attitute reminiscent of the Madchester glory days of Happy Mondays and Stone Roses.
Lo Fidelity Allstars began recording and sent a demo tape to Skint label-boss Damian Harris; after Harris saw them play live, he signed them.
The mix album On the Floor at the Boutique followed in 2000, and Lo Fidelity Allstars delivered their second studio record, Don't Be Afraid of Love, in early 2002.

Lo-Fidelity Allstars: Don't Be Afraid Of Love
This long-awaited follow-up to Lo Fidelity Allstars' splashy debut (we're not counting their in-between mix album) trades in the big beats and annoyingly artsy interludes of How to Operate With a Blown Mind for suave soul and funk-on-speed.
Lo Fidelity Allstars have found their groove—it seems to have been lost somewhere in the '70s—and thankfully ditched the existential angst that mired their first CD.
Lo Fidelity Allstars mince no words—they tell you straight up to shake your ass, and if you get your hands on this CD, you undoubtedly will.

The London-based Lo-Fidelity Allstars belong to the same generation of dance music as Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim.
In that respect, LFA recalls Renegade Soundwave, another combo that was stradling the border between the punk culture and the rave culture.
Elsewhere, LFA is trying to refound sweet and slow dance music by absorbing the sound of late Pink Floyd and OMID-era synth-pop.

 The_Lo_Fidelity_Allstars: How_To_Operate_With_A_Blown_Mind
If former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters were starting his musical career today instead of 30 years ago, he would be a Lo Fidelity Allstar.
The Lo Fidelity Allstars' How To Operate With A Blown Mind isn't rock, electronica, disco or hip-hop, even though all those elements surface in this English septet's album, which sounds like a sound track for some bizarre foreign film detailing a poor soul's descent into madness.
Rather than being straightforward with a verse-chorus-verse approach to writing lyrics to get a point across, the Lo Fidelity Allstars use the lyrics as simply another instrument, a human element mixed in with all the electronic effects.

To affirm Lo Fi's newly found dedication to the preservation of the motion of hips, they even include cosmic funkster Bootsy Collins as guest vocalist on the ultra-smooth stroller "On The Pier".
Lo Fi brings a few guests to this set, perhaps learning from their sucess with Pidgeonhead on "Battleflag".
The funky clavichord that was a signature of the band is as prominant as ever, as are roomfilling bass and infectious rhythms.

Dance Music From England With a Dark Side
Lo-Fidelity Allstars call their style "punk paste," shorthand for a merger of rock aggression with the cut-and-paste techniques of DJ-driven genres like hip-hop and house.
Lo-Fidelity Allstars also create songs with lyrics, rather than tracks peppered with sampled vocal hooks, as is the case with most big-beat groups.
Lo-Fidelity Allstars don't have any answers to these quandaries, but the band's turbulent sound and dark vision indicate a path beyond the commercialism and escapism that have stalled dance culture in its tracks these last few years.

Barnes & Noble.com - Music: How to Operate With a Blown Mind, Lo Fidelity Allstars, CD
Imagine a cross between Fatboy Slim and the Sex Pistols: UK sensations the Lo Fidelity Allstars infuse their techno with a wild, ribald arena-rock energy.
Yet unlike the Fatboy of the redemptive, soulful "Praise You," the Allstars bowl their listeners over with intense, brooding, punk-inspired rocktronica that hits like the mutant spawn of Prodigy and Mean Joe Greene, while singer -- yes, singer -- the Wrekked Train shouts apocalyptic blather over dark, distorted, ferocious music.
On occasion, however, the Allstars' attempt at a varied sound backfires; "I Used to Fall in Love" and "Vision Incision" are harshly distorted urban ballads with sub-Liam Gallagher winging in place of vocals.

Instead of detracting from the beats and sampled scratching, Randall is able to feed off the energy provided by the breakneck, catchy rhythms.
The Lo-Fidelity Allstars also dabble in the spoken-word arena with "I Used to Fall in Love" and the title track to the album, "How to Operate with A Blown Mind." Once again, these tracks exhibit a great deal of potential that goes unfulfilled.
The Lo-Fidelity Allstars have what it takes to produce catchy material that is also rich and dynamic.

The Lo-Fidelity Allstars' Don't Be Afraid of Love is another slab of eminently danceable, electro-laden funk, complete with vocals of pure vocodered soul--which proves addictive listening whether you've already learnt How To Operate With a Blown Mind or not.
Lo Fi's in Ibiza is also a pretty class tune.

Though the Lo Fidelity Allstars record for Skint, the hot Big Beat label that is home to Fatboy Slim, they are much like a Renegade Soundwave for today: like Renegade Soundwave, they don't fit conveniently into dance or indie.
The Allstars are very much sample-based, using sources as obvious as "Planet Rock" and old Stax and Motown songs to a variety of semi-obscure easy-listening like Lalo Schifrin and Eartha Kitt.
The Lo Fidelity Allstars seem almost like an indie version of the Prodigy; cooler, lighter, less dependant on obviously teenie ploys to propel their songs.

Lo Fidelity Allstars - Don't Be Afraid of Love (feat. Sleeping Faster) | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source ...
The fringe hits of 1997 and 1998 (can you remember "Disco Machine Gun" and "Battleflag"?) haven't been enough to sustain interest in the Lo Fidelity Allstars, and Don't Be Afraid of Love certainly won't be thrusting them to the forefront of the dance scene.
It all starts off with "What You Want" (which just isn't) and the "Deep Ellum...Hold On", the vocoder crazed "Lo Fi's In Ibiza" and the simply terrible "Don't Be Afraid of Love" long for the band to go their separate ways once more.
But there is an attempt to rescue things towards the end which stops from completely denouncing the comeback of the Lo Fi's.

The Boutique has branches in Berlin, London, New York and Dublin and as regular DJs at these clubs, the Allstars are known to set the night on fire with sets that combine all the classic old-school hip-hoppers with the newest in big-beat electronica.

Don't Be Afraid of Love - Lo Fidelity Allstars - Song Listings
It's never easy to sum up a scene even years after its peak, but with their second album, Lo Fidelity Allstars produced an all-encompassing statement on contemporary dance right in the midst of said scene.
Shoved along the path to re-creating themselves by virtually imploding on the eve of a big 1999 tour, Lo Fis returned with a statement of purpose on the title track: "we hit the ground running with a new-found sound," over a KLF-style disembodied vocal chorus.
Just like on their mix sets (exemplified by On the Floor at the Boutique), Lo Fi's know exactly how to effectively pace an album, moving from a blues jam to a party song to a blissed-out vocal with a smooth confidence.

Southall compared the album to the more recent disco-punk trend and remarked that it may have been the greatest album in that vein of music.
With their dark and looming façade lifted, the Lo-Fi Allstars came into their new sound full of a freshness that is usually reserved for the cleansing moisture on grass after a rainstorm.
But after revisiting both of their albums, and especially this oft-forgotten sophomore album, I’ve realized that they are just too wonderful not to share with the rest of the world.
