  Metallica, Metallica Band, Metallica Music
Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth.
Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions.
By the '90s, Metallica had changed the rules for all heavy metal bands; they were the leaders of the genre, respected not only by headbangers, but by mainstream record buyers and critics.

Thus, sociologically speaking, the fact that Load, Metallica's first album in five years, recently debuted at the top of the Billboard charts may well mean that we are about to return to an era where thunky metal reigns supreme.
Metallica used to be referred to as the only "smart" metal band on the planet--though what their smarts consisted of, other than not writing songs about beer and broads, was always a bit hazy.
Metallica has actually been much more successful at amalgamating other aspects of hard rock into their mix than most of their ilk, probably because it always eschewed the more obviously offensive aspects of metal to begin with.

 Metallica
Formed in California in the early 80s, Metallica didn't invent speed-metal, but they might as well have: their stuttering guitars, stop and start precision, thrashing drums, and snarling vocals have more or less defined the genre.
My ideal Metallica record would combine the unstoppable pristine fury of their early records with the pulsing swagger of the Metallica/Load period, and that'll probably never happen, so if you're curious about the full scope of the band, you'll have to pick up one record from the 80s and one from the 90s.
Metallica knocked out these five tracks in a week, thereby avoiding the perfectionism that can make their work sterile, and for once they actually sound like they're having a good time (The Misfits' "Last Caress/Green Hell").

 Review: Load
"Load" - Metallica's very long (78 minutes and 59 seconds on the nose) goodbye to the moldy stricture and dead-end Puritanism of no-frills thrash - is easily the heaviest record of the year, a seething beast of meaty, focused guitar dynamics, taut art-pop drama, unexpected vocal-harmony kicks and intensely personal lyric aggression.
Their 1996 opus, Load, not only ranks as one of this year's biggest disappointments, but comes across as a parody of the intelligent, brooding hard rock which made Metallica's eponymous 1991 disc a watershed.
Granted, Load possesses a few redeeming moments: "Hero of the Day" injects an iota of uplift amid the rampant sturm und drang, and "Mama Said" provides a desperately needed peek behind Metallica's armor.

As writers and a good percentage of the group's legion of fans saw it, when Metallica re-emerged last summer after nearly three years out of the public eye, most everything was different.
To him, Metallica is much the same as they were in 1991, when the group last released a studio record, the landmark self-titled release that is commonly known as the Black Album.
Metallica has undergone a major league makeover, clipping the shoulder length locks they'd sported since the group's inception in 1981 in favor of close cropped hairstyles.

LOAD may seem like a departure from the Metallica "norm," but it's actually what the band has been doing all along: writing well-crafted songs without a regard for what others think.
I thought after Load, Metallica would try to return to it's roots but after hearing this album, my ten twelve year loyalty to Metallica was severed permanantly.

 Interview "Load era 1" 1996
Load is a highly charged 'now' statement of where Metallica find themselves in '96 - built on a bedrock of their trademark riffing, yet frequently swerving left to accommodate the moody melodicism of grunge and, in its singles remixes, shuffling onto techno-filled dance floors to cut a rock-friendly rug.
Puffing on a cigar (cigars are big in the Metallica camp at the moment, though the existence of a cigar roadie is sadly unrecorded), Kirk settles down to talk about Load.
Metallica recently upped their notoriety via an already infamous "on the road" feature in lad's magazine Loaded, so if you've ever wondered what sort of "metal mayhem" Metallica get up to in between gigs, look no further.

Load's biggest problem is it's sloppy writing and repetitiveness, which ruins most songs on the album.

From the ever popular "sell out" yells of old school Metallica fans to the claims that it took "balls" to put out this record, there has been possibly more discussion over this "heavy metal" album than perhaps just about any other metal album of the last 10 years.
Load represents Metallica trying to grow up, trying to experiment, trying to change, all of those things.
It's slow building verses and energized chorus is catchy as hell, and yet, it seems that all the fans who cry "sell out" cite this as the one song on the album they truly love, despite it being the most commercial track on the record.

Metallica fans all know the progression: After four ballsy, thrashy metal albums, the band transitioned into Metallica, also known as the fl album, and that's where most say the trouble began.
While the fl album brought the band into the mainstream and produced a lot of genuinely great hits, it also signified the band's metamorphosis into more of a hard-rock outfit than a heavy metal one.
