 The Long Patrol: Editorial
I have to say, I was quite surprised when I read a well respected member of the ROC saying that 'Loamhedge' looks to be about the Abbey in the grips of Dryditch fever, before Abbess Germane and her brothers and sisters travel north to Mossflower, for this is not the case at all.
We tend to refer to the title of 'Loamhedge' as only being what we have dubbed it, but I think it could be the actual title for two main reasons.
Firstly, the fact that it is referred to as that, and nothing else, may mean that the publishers decide to use the title as it fits the book and is already familiar in the ROC.

Redwall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is the title of the first book of the series, published in 1986, the name of the Abbey featured in the book, and the name of an animated TV series based on the books, first aired in 1999.
The characters in the books are all animals of some sort, all of whom are capable of speech (except the horse), which Jacques renders as various dialects of English.
Later on, in the book Loamhedge, it is revealed that there were still a few tunnels left after the collapsing, and that some of the vermin survived.

In this chapter of the seemingly endless history of the woodland abbey, adventure is sparked by the sad plight of the haremaid, Martha Braebuck.
Many Redwall books (Triss is a perfect stereotype of this) are centered around a hero who eventually inherits Martin's sword and slays the evil warlord of the horde that is attacking Redwall with not much else standing out.
Loamhedge follows this somewhat, but it has a very interesting main plot which has almost nothing to do with the evil attacking hordes.

The third book in the Redwall series, Mattimeo is the story of Mattimeo, Matthias the Warrior's son, who is captured by a slaver and taken on a long journey far to the south of Mossflower Woods--a journey that will turn him from a youth into a warrior.
As such, this is a wonderful book for children in particular--it will encourage them in their own journey towards maturity and help them explore their family relationships and ties.
As a Redwall book, Mattimeo isn't particularly exceptional but it is enjoyable and explores a lot of new and interesting territory.

Lashing rain, driven by harsh biting winds from the sea, scoured the land from the bleak salt marshes to the stunted scrub forest.
As other reviewers have noted, this is not a book about Loamhedge itself, but a story partly about a journey to the abandoned abbey to find a remedy for a young hare who is unable to walk.
Loamhedge continues to linger on the periphery of the Redwall series, and perhaps one day we will hear its tale in full.

Triss, the 15th book in the distinguished and wildly popular animal fantasy series, chronicles the exploits of a brave squirrel maid who travels from the bonds of slavery to the meeting of her destiny as a warrior at Redwall Abbey.
All of the usual aspects of the Redwall books are here--riddles, adventures, travel, battles, lots of food, as well as a variety of cultures and accents, yet in Triss they seem different: over-exaggerated in many places and unusual in others.
It is a fantastic book for young children, and one that anyone can enjoy as long as they are okay with good and evil being fl and white concepts.

Loamhedge Abbey was a communal society, and in fact the pre-cursor to Redwall Abbey, located southeast of Mossflower country.
However, when a plague brought upon by vermin caused many residents to either get very sick or die, Abbess Germaine and Columbine took the rest of the healthy citizens away, and ended up in Mossflower Woods, where she drew up the plans for the new abbey, Redwall.
Loamhedge Abbey appears in Mattimeo and Loamhedge, and is mentioned in Mossflower.
