LOANGO, a region on the west coast of Africa, extending from the mouth of the Congo river in 6° S. northwards through about two degrees.
Buali, the capital, was situated on the banks of a small river not far from the port of Loango, where were several European "factories." The country afterwards became divided into a large number of petty states, while Portugal and France exercised an intermittent sovereignty over the coast.
The natives, mainly members of the Ba-Kongo group of Bantu negroes, and often called Ba-Fiot, are in general well-built, strongly dolichocephalous and very thick of skull, the skin of various shades of warm brown with the faintest suggestion of purple.

Loango National Park is an ideal location to conduct this project because of its unique ecosystem; it contains a mosaic of seashore, coastal forest, lagoon, savannah, swamps, secondary forest, and primary forest.
On a short-term basis, as we habituate the animals to human observers, we are studying the impact the habituation process has on the apes by examining their behavioural responses to observers and with non invasive methods, including genetics to understand dispersal patterns, endocrinology to examine stress hormones, and health by investigating pathogens.
This project is being conducted in collaboration with Operation Loango (a coalition between the Conseil National des Parcs Nationaux du Gabon – CNPN-, the Société pour la Conservation et le Development – SCD- and the Wildlife Conservation Society – WCS) (www.operation-loango.com).

A figurative Ivory tusk from the Loango coast--dating possibly from the mid to late 1800s and acquired by the National Museum of African Art in 1996--is a striking example of the Loango artistic tradition, The artist probably used iron tools to carve relief figures into the two-foot tusk.
The scenes on the tusk are separate vignettes meant to convey the essence of Kongo life and beliefs as perceived by Kongo peoples on the Loango coast during a time of transition.
By modeling the body positions, gestures, and facial expressions in a realistic manner, the artist adhered to the artistic traditions set forth in Kongo art, which is known for its naturalism.

 Loango National Park - Operation Loango
One of thirteen national parks created in Gabon in 2002, Loango National Park protects diverse coastal habitat, including part of the 220 km² Iguéla Lagoon, the only significant example of a typical western African lagoon system that is protected within a national park.
WCS is engaged in a collaborative venture with SCD (Societé de Conservation et Développement, a private tourism company) in Operation Loango, a unique effort to bring the private sector and an international NGO together to protect a national park.
WCS, partly funded by SCD tourism revenues, manages various conservation, monitoring, surveillance, and research activities in the park, all aimed at maintaining the long-term integrity of this ‘window into the past’.
