Lob (tennis) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A lob in tennis is hitting the ball high and deep into the opponent's court.
A lob is usually hit when an opponent is standing near the net, waiting to volley.
A good offensive lob cannot be reached by the opponent, yet it is low enough and has enough pace so that the opponent can not run back and chase it down.

Tennis (officially called "lawn tennis" to distinguish it from royal tennis or court tennis, an older form of the game, played indoors) is a racquet sport played between either two players (singles) or two teams of two players (doubles).
Tennis is played on a 78' x 27' (78' x 36' for doubles) court, which is divided in the middle by a net, such as that each side measures 39' in length.
Tennis was for many years predominantly a sport of the English-speaking world, dominated by the United States, Britain and Australia, although it was also popular in France: the French Open dates from 1891.

The Art of Lawn Tennis - Chapter IV
A lob is a high toss of the ball landing between the service-line and the baseline.
The ideas in lobbing are: (1) to give yourself time to recover position when pulled out of court by your opponent's shot; (2) to drive back the net man and break up his attack; (3) to tire your opponent; (4) occasionally to, win cleanly by placement.
The value of a lob is mainly one of upsetting your opponent, and its effects are very apparent if you unexpectedly bring off one at the crucial period of a match.

Lawn-tennis differs from tennis and racquets in that the service may not be taken on the volley by striker-out.
Good lobbing demands great skill, to avoid on the one hand sending the ball out of court beyond the base-line, and on the other allowing it to drop short enough for the adversary to kill it with a smashing volley.
By drawing the racquot across the ball at the moment of impact spin may be imparted to it asin tennis, or as side is imparted to a billiard ball, and the direction of this spin and the consequent behaviour of the ball after the stroke may be greatly varied by a skilful player.
