Lobodon carcinophaga, Crabeater Seal at MarineBio.org
Contrary to their common name, Crabeater seals, Lobodon carcinophaga (Hombron and Jacquinot, 1842), (often mispelled Lobodon carcinophagus), do not live up to their name, they do not feed primarily on crab.
Leopard seals are known to prey on crabeaters leaving long scars along the body.
Its remote habitat reduces the threats to this species, and are only at risk from environmental pollution (trace amounts of DDT have been found in this species) and the potential for overfishing of krill, the Crabeater's primary prey.

INDICATION OF WINTER FORAGING SUCCESS IN CRABEATER SEALS (LOBODON CARCINOPHSGUS) USING MEASURES OF BODY COMPOSITION.
In phocids, body reserves are important in determining reproductive effort and ability to survive periods of low food availability.
We measured body composition in 35 crabeater seals, Lobodon carcinophagus (31 adults, 4 juveniles), during the Antarctic fall (April-May 2002) and spring (August-September 2001, 2002) off the Antarctic peninsula by taking blubber depth measurements with a portable ultrasound and morphometric measurements.
