The State Government has also begun the process of constructing a relatively expensive sea water desalination plant in Kwinana (expected to be finished in late 2006), and is considering other solutions including piping water from the Kimberley region or extracting water from the Yarragadee Aquifer in the southwest of the state.
The government of Western Australia took a significant amount of criticism for creating the Bell Tower; it was said that the significant funding allotted for the project (millions of dollars) could have been better placed into the faltering health and education systems, and that the structure could have been better designed aesthetically.

The locals are an exceptionally friendly bunch, although they have been accused in the past of being rather parochial and inward-looking.
They are certainly inclined to be jokily dismissive of western Australians from the great centers of Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney, thousands of miles away on the eastern coast of this vast country.
During the local school holiday season the island authorities have chosen to control admission by outsiders to prevent overcrowding – so if you arrive in peak season you may have to have your name entered into a lottery (they call it the ‘ballot’) to gain admission.

In the Mallee, while Swan Hill waiting times have reduced slightly, Mildura patients are waiting 35 months for treatment, and now face a 16 month wait for dentures -- an increase of 10 months since late last year.
