Local group may bid for Globe - The Boston Globe
It is unclear whether the Boston group is willing to sign a formal pledge not to interfere in the editorial process, as the new buyers in Philadelphia did.
Advertising revenue for the New England Media Group, which includes the Globe and the Worcester Telegram, is down 10 percent for the year through September.
In Philadelphia, the new local owners are already saying layoffs are "unavoidable" because of a "permanent" decline in national newspaper advertising.

 The Local Group
Observations and calculations suggest that the group is highly dynamic and has changed significantly in the past: The galaxies around the large elliptical Maffei 1 have probably been once part of our galaxy group.
The next more distant galaxy groups, the NGC 4244 group and the CVn I Cloud (with M94 and M64) are probably too remote to have interacted significantly with the Local Group in the past.
It is of interest that of the subgroups of the Local Group mentioned above, the NGC 3109 group tends to the general direction of the Maffei 1 group and the M81 group, while the Local Group Cloud tends to the general direction of the Sculptor Group.

Local Walking Groups - The Ramblers Association
Groups are organised into Areas, who also sometimes run their own special walks.
Local volunteers do practical and campaigning work on access, footpaths, countryside protection, establishing and publicising walking routes, helping walkers with special needs and providing a year-round programme of group walks across Great Britain.
Most Groups are organised on a geographical basis and welcome all walkers but some Groups cover a wider area for particular types of walkers: for example our growing network of 20s-30s Groups.

Friends of the Earth local groups campaign to improve the environment in their own backyard, as well as joining in with campaigns nationally and internationally.
In local communities around the country, Friends of the Earth local groups are actively campaigning for a safer, cleaner local environment.

The Triangulum galaxy (left) is a spiral galaxy and the third largest galaxy in the local group, it contains 50 billion stars.
NGC 3109 (bottom right) is another dwarf irregular galaxy of several hundred million stars and it is also the largest member of a small sub-group of galaxies within the Local Group.

Local Group Functions [Network Management]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The network management local group functions control members of local groups in a way that the functions can only be called locally on the system on which the local group is defined.
On Windows NT 4.0, a local group is defined on the primary domain controller and replicated to all other domain controllers in the domain.
Therefore, a local group is available on all domain controllers within the domain in which it was created.

The Local Group was first recognised by Hubble in the early days of extragalactic research when distances to galaxies were first being measured.
Most of the light (and mass) in the Local Group is contained in the two large spiral galaxies, the Milky Way and Andromeda, and most of the known smaller members of the Local Group are satellite galaxies orbiting these systems.
The upper and lower "tram lines" denote regions beyond which objects are unlikely to be bound to the Local Group.

In cases such as these, the New Group Approver (the NGA - this is the person who will review your initial application) will need to work with our Group Outreach and Assistance team (hereafter referred to as GOA) to determine another course of action for the area you propose.
Also note: there cannot be more than one group per owner and the owner must, of course, actually live in the area that the proposed group covers.

Curious About Astronomy: Is the Local Group expanding along with the entire Universe?
The two largest galaxies, the Milky Way and the Andromeda, are moving towards each other at about 119 km/s instead of expanding along with the rest of the universe because the gravitational attraction between the two is stronger.
On a larger scale, the Local Group is moving towards the Local Supercluster at about 600 km/s, but it doesn't head straight for the center of the Local Supercluster as expected.
Astronomers think that this is because of a large cluster of galaxies beyond the Local Supercluster that we call the "Great Attractor." Though its position and structure isn't known exactly, its existence is inferred from how the Local Group is moving towards the Local Supercluster.
