The Boogiewall Soundsystem function more as a collective than a normal band, seeking out collaborations with DJs and dance music producers as well as MCs and horn sections. This disc features remixes by UK dub hero the Mad Professor and a house mix by local boy Rob Nice.
From full band reggae and ska to down-tempo studio dub, the debut album from Toronto's Boogiewall Soundsystem, 'Super My Own Band" is an ambitious and satisfying endeavor that finds vocalist Tanya Kornobis and crew unbacked by the power of their recent mad professor remix but still indexing Morcheeba or Massive Attack.

The Rapture: Echoes ---Ink Blot Magazine
The Rapture were a group of California punks who settled into the Bay Area in the late 90s and played the kind of noisy, tune-hating punk rock that guarantees a band local hero status.
But it seems just as likely that the album was delayed by its own shortcomings.
I mean, the very thought of The Rapture, a band of wild-haired New York punks zestily experimenting with pupil-expanding dance music under the tutelage of the day's most important producers…it's just too good not to believe in.

Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La - Warner Brothers Records - CD
Knopfler began his solo work in earnest, while still with the band, doing the soundtrack to the great little movie 'Local Hero', in 1983.
In 1996, Knopfler's first proper solo album was released to mixed reviews.
Knopfler does some sweet chicken-pickin' on the shit-kickin' Lonnie Donegan tribute "Donegan's Gone", and "Don't Crash the Ambulance" closes out the disc with what could be a stolen serenade from a spaghetti western, with great wry, cryptic lyrics.

Knopfler has contributed to numerous movie soundtracks such as Local Hero (1983), Wag the Dog (1998), Metroland (1998) and Shot at Glory (2002).
The album was released as a deluxe edition, which includes both a CD and a DVD featuring behind-the-scenes interviews and performances of four songs including the previously unreleased track, “Summer of Love.”
The album’s title track helped propel it to number one on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart.

In fact, the entire album (aside from the vocal tracks) is very familiar--it sounds a heckuva lot like the "Local Hero" soundtrack.
While I prefer the Dire Straits albums, or the solo albums by David or Mark, the soundtracks that Mark has composed over the past 20 years have found a comfortable spot on the cd rack as well.
And this release doesn't vary the formula from his previous soundtracks too much at all (although it is much more a Knopfler album than the somewhat annoying "Metroland").

The band's popularity was reinforced by albums such as Communiqué and Making Movies, and before long, Knopfler was also much in demand as a session gun-for-hire (Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry, Steely Dan); film composer (Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride); and record producer (Bob Dylan, Aztec Camera, Randy Newman).
Even then, there was nothing to indicate, to Knopfler or anyone else, that Brothers in Arms would cement itself as one of rock's all-time bestselling albums: 20 million and counting, last time anybody sat down with a calculator.
This seems like the perfect moment to bring the conversation back to the new album, but on this subject Knopfler modestly reserves his enthusiasm for his co-star's rather than his own achievements ("James Taylor is in great shape...

Local sensation The Hero Factor has finished their first proper studio album and they are inviting all their friends and fans to come out and celebrate with them.
Hero Factor’s sound is organic, built around classic guitar tones and vintage keyboard washes that sound fresh and current (instead of coming off as a dated re-hash of the past), soaring with Kilgore’s soulful vocals to amazing effect.

I came to love all their albums as much as "Love Over Gold", and I was pleased when they recently released this anthology of many of their hits, even including a theme from Knopfler's "Local Hero" movie score.
For one thing, CD dominance has made for longer compilations, and this one is fleshed out by singles, three tracks from 1991's On Every Street, and Knopfler's solo "Local Hero" theme, performed live.
Of course, as I think back upon it, I was familiar with their hit "Sultans Of Swing", but never really paid much attention until hearing this terrific album and Mark Knopfler's unbelievably stirring, crisp and innovative guitar solos.

In the time since the band was actively recording in the mid 1980s, Knopfler has become a kind of institutionalized artistic force everywhere one looked, writing soundtrack music for (among other films) "Local Hero" and "Cal", performing both alone and with Dire Straits, and collaborating with other artists, as well.

 TrouserPress.com :: Wedding Present
When the Wedding Present chose iconoclastic soccer superstar George Best as the cover boy and namesake of its first album, the Leeds group wasn't just honoring a universal pop icon or a local childhood hero.
Frequently slow and spare, letting small-scale instrumental restraint release Gedge's most luminous melodies and performances, the album is a surprising charmer — except in the lyrics of songs that shrug off guilt while acknowledging its validity.
After a lone album, several radio sessions and a stack of singles, the Wedding Present was already due for a leftovers collection, Tommy, which summarizes the prolific band's first two years, a crucial era for independent music in Britain.

When the band Boston released its self-named debut album in 1976, the gargantuan hit "More Than a Feeling" gave local-hero status to guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz -- and earned the band an almost cultlike following among classic-rock fans.
