Battery (electricity) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Multiple batteries or cells may also be refered to as a battery pack as a set of multi-cell 12 V batteries in an electric vehicle.
This battery is notable in that it contains a liquid in an unsealed container, requiring that the battery be kept upright and the area be well-ventilated to deal with the explosive oxygen and hydrogen gases which are vented by these batteries during overcharging.
A battery explosion is usually caused by the misuse or malfunction of a battery (such as the recharging of a non-rechargeable battery or shorting a car battery).

Battery (electricity) - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Although such storage in an electrostatic form is practical in some specialized uses, batteries usually consist of electrochemical devices such as one or more galvanic cells or more recently fuel cells, and may in the future use other technologies.
There is some evidence—in the form of the Baghdad Batteries from sometime between 250 BC and 640 AD—of galvanic cells having been used in ancient times to electroplate base metal objects with a precious metal.
The oldest form of rechargeable battery still in modern usage is the lead-acid battery.

During the charging process, should the battery case become hot to the touch, or should the liquid start to bubble out the vent caps, remove the battery from the charger and check the battery with a hydrometor.
However, if you should notice that your battery is having a hard time cranking over your engine, replace the battery with the same size battery with the same rating that is recommended by the BCI catalog or if possible with a higher rating of the same size battery.
On a battery it can be identified as the larger of the two posts or by the plus sign, which is often used to identify the post.

 LOCAL BATTERY - AN EXPLANATION
The LB system was superseded by the Central Battery system which used a large set of batteries at the local exchange and this became possible because of savings made by economies of scale.
The transmission efficiency of a local battery telephone connected by a line of high resistance to an exchange is greater than that of a Central Battery telephone.
on the auto-transformer principle; the primary is in the local circuit of the transmitter, the secondary is connected via the 2 F condenser and the gravity switch to the receiver, while the tertiary, in series with the other two windings, is connected across the lines.

The battery is enclosed in a sheet metal box, the dimensions of which are 4.5 in.
Its base voltage varies with the potential of the local battery and is derived from the potential drop across resistor R4 and part of variable resistor RV1.
When the battery voltage exceeds the upper limit of the battery, the transistor base potential becomes negative with respect to the emitter and the transistor switches to ‘on’.

Although local source batteries are sometimes touted as having a 10-year life span in a climate-controlled laboratory setting, that length of time is curtailed significantly when the rigors of the real world are factored in.
While local batteries represent a direct match of capital and service deployment, network power installations are over-engineered in a sense, because they are engineered to serve homes that may or may not buy phone service from the cable operator.
The battery could then back-up the generator, which would have to eventually be shut down for maintenance during a prolonged utility power outage.

Vanadium Vanadium Redox Flow Cell Battery
The energy density of the vanadi-um redox battery is determined by the concentration of vanadium ions in the electrolyte, this being a function of the saturation solu-bility of the different oxidation states that are formed during charg-ing and discharging in the positive and negative half- cell solutions.
However, the performance of the lead- acid battery compared to other components of contemporary PV- systems is varied, and on a life cycle basis, the lead- acid battery becomes a significant element of total system costs.
Telecommunication companies are the largest users of storage batteries for back-up power on grid connected DC powered systems, such as switches, receivers and transmitters that must continue to operate in the event of electricity grid failure.

 Leclanché Battery
When the telegraph system was the primary means of communication in the 1830 to 1880 time frame batteries were needed at every telegraph station.
Later when the telephone required a local battery these same cells were used until they were replaced with a different physical form of the same chemistry called the No. 6.
The Leclanché Battery is a primary chemistry type, but was made in an open glass jar (called a wet cell) so that when the battery was dead the electrolyte could be dumped out and fresh electrolyte put back in thus chemically recharging the battery.
