  Local Government - LoveToKnow 1911
LOCAL GOVERNMENT, a phrase specially adopted in English usage for the decentralized or deconcentrated administration, within a state or national and central government, of local affairs by local authorities.
The degree to which local government is adopted varies considerably in different countries, and those which are the best examples of it in modern times - the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Germany - differ very much in their local institutions, partly through historical, partly through temperamental, causes.
The history and present state of the local government in the various countries are dealt with in the separate articles on them (England, Germany, candc.), in the sections dealing with government and administration, or political institutions.

Local government in the United Kingdom is a settled feature of the constitutional architecture and has long acted as an agency of the state in order to fulfil many of the functions required by central government to ameliorate social problems throughout the years.
Local government boundaries owe their current basis to local government legislation, though voluntary mergers are permissible under the law and the Boundary Committee for England is now responsible for the overall examination of local government boundaries and structures.
Local government in the Republic of Ireland predates its national political structures, with much of the constitutional arrangements laid down under British rule in the late nineteenth century remaining in place.

By the end of the 1980s, equal opportunities policies in local government had been partly discredited; in particular, equal opportunities were associated by some with 'loony left' councils.
However, while the success of equal opportunities policies in local government were questioned, it should be acknowledged that local government was in advance of the private sector in addressing these issues.
One of the biggest challenges for local government is to overcome the high levels of disinterest in both local elections and local authority activities generally.
