  The Early Realists
As in France the realism of Balzac, of Dumas fils, of Augier, gave place to the naturalism of Flaubert, of Becque, and the dramatists of the Théâtre Libre, so in Italy, Ferrari and Torelli gave place to Verga and Capuana.
Realism did not by any means begin its life as a bantling flung naked on the rocks; as a matter of fact it inherited a rather comfortable property from its predecessor, the Romanticism which took its rise about 1825, and which went through its several phases within the fifty years following that date.
But it is not unfair to say that realism existed in the new Romanticism as a germ, that it becomes a bud in Ferrari and Torelli, blossoms in Giacosa, and comes to fruition in the naturalism of Verga.

EPR paradox   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The principle of locality is persuasive, both in intuitive grounds and because it seems at first sight to be a natural outgrowth of the theory of special relativity.
The belief that entanglement is a real phenomenon has led to a radical shift in thinking about 'what is reality' and what is a 'state of a physical system'.
Today, most physicists agree that local hidden variable theories are untenable and that the principle of locality does not hold.

 Stanford Encyclopedia article
Dual-aspect approaches consider mental and material domains of reality as aspects, or manifestations, of one underlying reality in which mind and matter are unseparated.
In such a framework, the distinction between mind and matter results from the application of a basic tool for achieving epistemic access to, i.e., gather knowledge about, both the separated domains and the underlying reality.[ 12 ] Consequently, the status of the underlying, psychophysically neutral domain is considered as ontic relative to the mind-matter distinction.
These two concepts of time emerge due to a symmetry breaking of a timeless level of reality that is psychophysically neutral.[ 15 ] Nowness and the directedness of time originate in the mental domain, whose tensed time is quantum-correlated with the parameter time of physics via time-entanglement.

 Amer_Realism
The reading public's preference for realism parallels the changes that were occurring at the end of the 19th and into the 20th century.
Characters appear in the real complexity of temperament and motive; they are in explicable relation to nature, to each other, to their social class, to their own past.
It was an extension of realism, a reaction against the restrictions inherent in the realistic emphasis on the ordinary, as naturalists insisted that the extraordinary is real, too.

Hamlin Garland's Literary Creed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Simply put, "local color" is an attempt to reproduce facts of immediate present, the texture of life which writer has experienced, with a focus on American life of a given locale in an effort to foster a distinctively American literature through the depiction of a region's characters, customs, and textures of life.
Local color in a novel means that it has such quality of texture and background that it could not have been written in any other place or by any one less than a native.
So, the distinction between veritism (or impressionism or local color) and realism, as Garland defines it, is that while the realist attempts to depict things as they are (photographic, as contemporary critics derided), Garland infuses the vision of the individual artist into the work.

Kate Chopin: Literary Movements of Time
A deeper, more pessimistic, literary movement called Naturalism grew out of Realism and stressed the uncaring aspect of nature and the genetic, biological destiny of man. Naturalists believed that man's instinctual, basic drives dominated their actions and could not be evaded.
The novel is also true to the real life aspects of Realism and Naturalism in its forthright dealing with sexual matters: Arobin's seduction, the hot kisses she gives to Robert, Leonce's allusion that they no longer sleep together, the naked man on the rock.
A local color work "is one in which the identity of the setting is integral to the very unfolding of the theme, rather than simply incidental to a theme that could as well be set anywhere" ( May, 195).

ACM SIGGRAPH CAMPFIRE: perceptually adaptive graphics
In this way, each group will be linked to a set of nearby groups for the purposes of local interreflection, and to an environment map and surrogate source list for the purposes of generating shadows and reflections.
Local interreflection may be computed using any combination of object-space and image-space algorithms, since complexity is held in check by grouping and image segmentation.
However, the goal of realism has never been very well-defined in graphics, and hence a good deal of effort has been spent to achieve physical accuracy, which is most assuredly overkill if all you want is to produce something that looks real to a human observer.

In a way, the local realist defenders are right when people claim, erroneously, that it has now been proved, once and for all, that local realism is absolutely impossible, for the rest of the future of science, because this is an overstatement which is not scientific.
If local realism is to be right then the electron will always have a well defined position that would imply it travels through only one of the two slits and further since we only allow local influences it would have to be unaffected of whether the other slit was open or closed!

 Regionalism and Local Color Fiction
Local color or regional literature is fiction and poetry that focuses on the characters, dialect, customs, topography, and other features particular to a specific region.
Its customary form is the sketch or short story, although Hamlin Garland argued for the novel of local color.
Regional literature incorporates the broader concept of sectional differences, although Judith Fetterley and Marjorie Pryse have argued convincingly that the distinguishing characteristic that separates "local color" writers from "regional" writers is instead the exploitation of and condescension toward their subjects that the local color writers demonstrate.

He suggests that local realism is so important as a scientific principle that we should abandon it only if faced with the most direct and unambiguous evidence.
Locality leads Alice to deduce that she is as likely to see an up spin as a down spin.
This makes his claim that his theory describes an objective reality independent of observers quite incomprehensible, unless that objective reality is the reality of the entire set of possible frameworks, which is presumably the reality of a no-collapse interpretation of quantum theory, and is therefore very different from the reality which we apparently observe.

Introduce to your students concepts of realism, a literary movement in the 19th century that focused on reporting aspects of "common" life (common, of course, is a relative term).
Whereas local color is often applied to a specific literary mode that flourished in the late 19th century, regionalism implies a recognition from the colonial period to the present of differences among specific areas of the country.
The teacher should select a passage not examined by students in class thus far and have students mine it for realism, local color, setting, and how it effects the portrayal of Edna and her situation.

Local realism and the crucial experiment
However, many physicists and philosophers today believe that the violations of Bell's inequality [3], such as are manifested in Aspect's [4] and other experiments, are inconsistent with the conjunction of realism and locality, so that at least one of these two classical prerequisites should be abandoned.
Here, the alternatives are "Nature can be described by a local realistic theory" and "Nature cannot be described by a local realistic theory", and Aspect's experiment decides in favor of the second.
Between the metaphysical statement "a local realistic theory is impossible" and the actual experimental set-up there is a huge gap, which can only be bridged with the aid of many auxiliary hypotheses.

"Non-Locality" and Realism: A Brief Discussion
Indeed, historically, "non-locality" is one of the aspects of QM that has been put forward by opponents of realism as evidence that no "common-sense" physical interpretation of the theory is possible.
So a proper commitment to realism allows one to veto out of hand any assertion that, for instance, micro-physical processes lack identity, or that quantum systems exist in an indeterminate state of limbo until a measurement is made.
As discussed in an earlier footnote, it is reasonable (and certainly not contradicted by experiment) to think that all interactions are "local" in the stronger sense of the term.

Local Realism - what does it mean?
Realists think that this model describes what is really there, for instance that there is some sort of quantumstuff making up the universe, while antirealists point out that this makes no sense as it implies that there could be a further level of theory describing the internal workings of the quantumstuff.
What I find strange is that people seemed really surprised at the creation of an interpretation of quantum theory which was compatible with realism.
Finally I would note that the claim that quantum theory is totally incompatible with local realism isn't strictly true.

What sets the colorists apart is their self-conscious and exclusive interest in rendering a given location, and their scrupulously factual, realistic technique.
He was the champion of realism, and his novels, such as A Modern Instance (1882), The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890), carefully interweave social circumstances with the emotions of ordinary middle-class Americans.
Often they exposed social problems and were influenced by Darwinian thought and the related philosophical doctrine of determinism, which views individuals as the helpless pawns of economic and social forces beyond their control.

Antiterrorism officials are planning a series of drills to test Boston's readiness for an attack, ending in May with the simulated hijacking of a United Airlines flight from Europe that is forced to land at Logan International Airport, officials said yesterday.
Dubbed Operation Atlas, the drills will involve some 50 local, state, and federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, which will lead a series of meetings to brainstorm and act out potential terrorist attacks.
In the hijacking exercise, the first in the nation since the 2001 terrorist attacks, a United flight from a major European city, carrying role-playing passengers, would take off as though bound for Chicago or another American city.

Drawing on the history of state and local government in the New York Tri-State metropolitan region, the authors present a pathbreaking new theory about the values reformers must understand and balance in order to tackle the hard challenges of reforming and regionalizing local governance in the complex, dynamic world of American politics and public policy.
Their examination of the way 2,179 local governments in the Tri-State region have evolved over more than a century pays special attention to New York City, but is applicable to other metropolitan areas.
It brings to life ideas that are crucial to a subject that in the academic literature is often treated in a way that is abstract and hard to grasp.
