Localhost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The initial letter is capitalized due to technical restrictions.
In computing the term localhost refers to the location of the currently used system.
It is a loopback device which is assigned the IP address 127.0.0.1 in IPv4, or ::1 in IPv6, which can be used by TCP/IP applications to talk to themselves if this is needed.

Gojomo: Harwood and Jacobs, Localhost @ CodeCon 2006 4pm Friday
Localhost creates a wiki-liek global virtual hierarchical filesystem "containing" torrents.
There'd be a "majoritarian" view of the tree -- summed from everyone's preferences -- but your personal moves of items and categories to and fro would be persistent for you, and perhaps others in declared agreement with you, so that's what you and they would see.
I suspect the system of Localhost would have to include some dampener to prevent the "popularity breeds popularity" effect, where the fact most people never go past the top versions means they enjoy self-reinforcing dominance.

 Definition of Localhost
For example, if you are running a Web browser on your computer, your computer is considered to be the "localhost." While this does not need to be specified when using a single computer, the localhost does need to be defined when running programs from multiple computers.
The local machine is defined as "localhost," which gives it an IP address of 127.0.0.1.
Localhost is often used in Web scripting languages like PHP and ASP when defining what server the code should run from or where a database is located.

Localhost is a program that lets you access a shared, world-wide file system through your web browser.
If it is good, it will be the version seen by everyone else using the system, including users viewing the web-preview.
Localhost is completely backwards compatable with Azureus 2.3.0.4, so if you're used to using Azureus, you can use Localhost as you would Azureus, and also have access to the Localhost file system.

Coding Horror: Localhost HTTP debugging with Fiddler
Localhost packets don't pass through the regular network stack, so they're invisible to an ethernet sniffer.
I suppose you could always try mapping localhost to an external interface in hosts, or just using an external proxy (and using the external interface IP), but if the app explicitly binds to only the localhost, you'll find that most anything you try is going to be a problem.
Then you sniff packets addressed or coming from localhost because they will pas through the complete IP stack (redirected to a physical NIC as they are).

If it works for you too, it must be because of the way the OS resolves "localhost".
There need not be a "localhost" (actually it is often replaced with "build" on test servers) but there will always be a 127.0.0.1 when there is a TCP-protocol.

If you do not have localhost entries in the search path, you may see one of two problems: 1.
"localhost." exists in the root nameservers on the Internet, so this problem should onnly occur in networks where the following is true: 1.
Internal DNS does not have an entry for "localhost." The simplest solution is to create a domain and entry for "localhost." or add "localhost" to a domain in mail server's domain search path.

Somehow this is set somewhere but I can't for the life of me find the configuration that maps "localhost" to a partical path.
when you use localhost in a web browser, it tries to contact the web server (Apache) that is running on the machine you are on.
Somehow after that if I entered "Localhost" on the URL line in my browser, it would go to a sub- directory in /Webserver/Documents/mysite/index.html.

This is no longer the case however (and we're going okay with /home pointing to the plone server content) and it still points to localhost when running eep_check.
The final issue I had when testing was when mapping root(/) to the plone server and using auto_excludes = all so that anything already on iis would get passed through to iis as normal.
So when eep_check uses 'localhost', it is because it can not find an explicit hostname in the IIS metabase.

If you send a Web request to the localhost through a proxy that is also running on the localhost, the request does not succeed.
To work around this problem, use the host name instead of loopback adapter name (for example, instead of "localhost" or instead of address 127.0.0.1).

Localhost is pretty much dead; I just no longer have the time to update it even infrequently, and although I still put in a few minutes here and there to work on FileReader, at the rate it's being completed, I'd set the release date at somewhere in the vicinity of the year 2020.

I think that pretty much sums up the fate of localhost, at least for the time being.
