Locant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A locant can be used in organic chemistry to indicate the position of a functional group within a molecule.
The locant is the number of the carbon atom to which the oxygen atom is bonded.
If the oxygen is bonded to an atom on either side (adjacent to an end carbon), the locant is 2 or 4; given the choice here, where the carbons are exactly equivalent, always choose the lower number.

 Enynes
The alkene suffix "ene" minus the last "e" is inserted after the root with its locant before the root.
The chain is numbered in accord with the first point of difference rule to either the alkene or alkyne units the lowest possible locant.
The locant for the lowest numbered carbon of the alkene or alkyne is used in the name.

 Alkenes
The root name is based on the longest chain containing both ends of the alkene unit, the C=C. The chain is numbered so as to give the alkene unit the lowest possible numbers.
The locant for the first carbon of the alkene is used in the name.
The C=C is unambiguously between C1 and C2 therefore the locant isn't required.

 Isotopically modified compounds, H-2
In general, in organic nomenclature locants for suffixes, unsaturation, free valences, etc., cited ahead of the parent are considered as part of the name.
In this report the practice of citing the isotopic descriptor ahead of such locants is followed; in biochemical usage the isotopic descriptor is often cited after such locants.
Identical locants corresponding to the same element are not repeated.

The carbonyl group in the alkanoate family is always at the end of a carbon chain and as such is always position 1.
As with the alkanals, alkanamides, and alkanoic acids the locant (1) is omitted on the alkanoate part of the name.
The carbon chain not containing the carbonyl group may be attached at any carbon in the chain and so must have a locant when isomers are possible.

A locant in a name is a prefix specifying the location of a substituent.
These locants are discussed in the glossary entries for N- and n- and Greek letters.
The capital N prefix is a locant for a group that is attached to a nitrogen.

Rule for writing the name: The position identifier (locant) is prefixed to the name of the branch using hyphens to separate the position identifiers from the name.
If there are two or more of the same branch in a given molecule the prefixes di, tri, tetra, etc., are used together with a set of position identifiers, one for each of the branches, with the position identifiers separated by commas.
IUPAC now puts the locant immediately in front of the group that it is positioning: hex-3-yne rather than 3-hexyne.

It is important to realize that the locant for a double bond indicates the first carbon only and that the second carbon is understood to be the locant + 1 position.
In this compound the locant of the double bond is 1, which is omitted in the name, so the double bond is between carbon atoms 1 and 2 in the ring.
Continuing the numbering around the ring gives the locant for the second chlorine as 6.
