 glossary
The four parts of the ISBN are: group identifier (e.g., national, geographic, language or other convenient group), publisher identifier, title identifier, and check digit.
A list of parts contained within a book or periodical, such as chapter titles and periodical articles, with references by page number or other location symbol to the place they begin, and in the sequence in which they appear.
It represents a unique location or "address" of a resource located on the World Wide Web; similar to a call number for library materials.

11.14 urlparse -- Parse URLs into components
Parse a URL into 6 components, returning a 6-tuple: (addressing scheme, network location, path, parameters, query, fragment identifier).
This function returns a 5-tuple: (addressing scheme, network location, path, query, fragment identifier).
with no fragment identifier, and the fragment identifier as a separate string.

 Creating DocBook Documents
Referring to a document with a public identifier should mean that the identifier will resolve to the same actual document on any system even though the location of that document on each system may vary.
When a relative system identifier is used, it is considered to be relative to the location of the catalog file, not the document being processed.
The text class identifies the kind of document that is associated with this public identifier.

And, the second location area (E) and each second cell (e) are assigned a second location area identifier (LAI-E) and a second code (200), wherein the first code (200) and the second code (200) are used to differentiate between the first location area (A) and the second location area (E).
The first location area (A) and each first cell (a) are assigned a first location area identifier (LAI-A) and a first code (200).
The first system (102) and the second system (110) may be one and the same, and the cells (a, e) managed by both systems (102, 110) can belong to the same location area.

 URI - Uniform Resource Identifier
Uniform Resource Identifiers specify a standardized method for encoding combined resource identification and location information systems to be used for resource discovery and access systems in an Internet environment.
The basic idea is that a resource (e.g., a document) is identified by a URN, a kind of `public identifier' in the SGML sense.
URIs are used in HTML to identify the destination of hypertext links, the source of in-line images, and the object of form actions.

Uniform Resource Identifier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An optional fragment identifier, preceded by "#", may be present at the end of a URI reference.
If a fragment identifier is present in the URI reference, it is preserved during the merging process.
A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a URI that, in addition to identifying a resource, provides a means of acting upon or obtaining a representation of the resource by describing its primary access mechanism or network "location".

 United States Patent Application: 0030023586
A method according to claim 13 or 14 wherein the geographical location identifier is specified by a precise point of latitude and longitude.
For example, a pizza shop might have a customer base located exclusively within a 5 km radius, but an Internet search on "pizza shops" might bring up thousands of such shops from all round the world, so that shops in the relevant geographical location are lost amongst the large number of irrelevant ones.
Two of the most common ways of locating relevant information on the Internet are to locate a URL in a printed publication or television advertisement and to enter it into a web browser to "visit" the URL and obtain the desired information, or to use one of the many Internet search engines.

 Scanning object-location bar-codes
Each record is comprised of a catalog number, a location identifier (three numbers), a container number (which may be empty), and a date.
Thus, it is possible to record the location of a specimen by scanning the bar-codes for its tray label and catalog number, and having the input device provide a system date.
The location of the container can then be scanned to a location as though it were a single item.

 DOI System Overview - Introduction
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a name (not a location) for an entity on digital networks.
Identifiers assigned in one context may be encountered, and may be re-used, in another place (or time) without consulting the assigner, who cannot guarantee that his assumptions will be known to someone else.
Resolution is the process in which an identifier is the input (a request) to a network service to receive in return a specific output of one or more pieces of current information (state data) related to the identified entity: e.g.

 Process control blocks
Process identification data always include a unique identifier for the process (almost invariably an integer number) and, in a multiuser-multitasking system, data like the identifier the parent process, user identifier, user group identifier, etc. The process id is particularly relevant, since it's often used to cross-reference the OS tables defined above, e.g.
At least part of the process control data structure is always maintained in main memory, though its exact location and configuration varies with the OS and the memory management technique it uses.
Process structuring information:process's children id's, or the id's of other processes related to the current one in some functional way, which may be represented as a queue, a ring or other data structures.

 JEP: DOI: Promise and Problems
The problem with legacy identifiers is that such codes will lose their original meaning if the object changes ownership and context during the course of its useful life, just as the ISBN cannot always be used to identify the current publisher of a work.
When an object's location changes, either within that publisher's databases or when it is transferred to another publisher's database, information concerning that change is sent by the object's owner to the server, which automatically updates the record.
Existing identifiers such as the ISBN and ISSN, which were created for print publishing, do not provide the range of identification and trading needs required in the electronic environment.

Uniform Resource Locator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a string of characters conforming to a standardized format, which refers to a resource on the Internet (such as a document or an image) by its location.
Every URL is a type of Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), or, more precisely, the set of URLs is a proper subset of the set of URIs.
A URL is classified by its scheme, which typically indicates the network protocol used to retrieve a representation of the identified resource over a computer network.

 Xerces2 Implementation: Class DOMInputImpl
The public identifier is always optional: if the application writer includes one, it will be provided as part of the location information.
This Class allows an application to encapsulate information about an input source in a single object, which may include a public identifier, a system identifier, a byte stream (possibly with a specified encoding), and/or a character stream.
Constructs an input source from just the public and system identifiers, leaving resolution of the entity and opening of the input stream up to the caller.

 Object Identifier Types
Object identifiers (OIDs) are used internally by PostgreSQL as primary keys for various system tables.
A tuple ID is a pair (block number, tuple index within block) that identifies the physical location of the tuple within its table.
All of the OID alias types accept schema-qualified names, and will display schema-qualified names on output if the object would not be found in the current search path without being qualified.

repository blog: Proposal for ref collection-based paths
The UUID works as a unique and constant persistent pointer to an item that is valid for the life of the item while the Path to an item is a sequence of intrisically named items acting as containers describing the item's current location in the repository.
Natively, the repository supports two ways of finding any item, by Universally Unique IDentifier (UUID) and by Path.
While it would be difficult to lift the first constraint, the second one could be lifted.

 Naming -- /DesignIssues
Conventionally, a "name" has tended to mean a logical way of referring to an object in some abstract name space, while the term "address" has been used for something which specifies the physical location.
The term "unique identifier" generally referred to a name which was guaranteed to be unique but had little significance as regards the logical name or physical address.
Whereas the hierarchical structure might make it difficult to decide in which of two locations to put an object (it's not hypertext), this does allow a unique name to be given for anything in the tree.

ICSTI Forum, no. 30, April 1999
The introduction of unique persistent names for entities adds significantly to the flexibility of a digital architecture for information, by introducing a layer of re-direction enabling separation of the abstract identifier (name) from the data type which is a carrier of, or action on, that entity (such as location).
As a general purpose indirection system that resolves identifiers into state information, the Handle System can be used to advantage in any dynamic network environment as part of the overall process of managing digital objects.
Digital linking, however, can be fraught with problems, not the least of which is the virtual nature of the digital medium.

However, in some circumstances (such as when the document was generated on another system, when the document was generated in another location on the same system, or when some files referenced by system identifiers have had their locations changed since the document was generated), the specified system identifiers may not be valid.
Lookup for subsequent public identifiers is unaffected by this process; that is, the effect of this replacement catalog holds only for the lookup of the current entity's public identifier.
Note that the public identifier in a DTDDECL entry is meant to match a public identifier given as part of the doctype declaration to reference the external subset.
