  Port Campbell National Park - Loch Ard Gorge
Loch Ard Gorge visitors are treated to a beautiful vista of towering cliffs, sparkling blue-green sea and a small, sandy beach.
But the ship dragged the anchors and desperate attempts to raise the sails were abruptly cut short when the Loch Ard struck the cliffs.
Visitors to Loch Ard today can descend the staircase to the beach and see where Tom and Eva struggled to survive.

This is a mound of land prevented from becoming an island by an umbilical cord of sand and shingle linking it to the east shore of the loch where the Tongue road descends from the moorland to the east.
Ard Neakie was used as the terminus of the Heilam Ferry, which crossed the loch to the - now gone - Heilam Inn on the west bank of the loch at Portnancon.
Ard Neakie is also notable for the four large lime kilns built in 1870.

A loch in the Trossachs district of Stirling Council Area, Loch Ard lies to the north of Loch Ard Forest, 3 miles (5 km) west of Aberfoyle.
Loch Ard has an area of 243 ha (600 acres) and a mean depth of 13.4m (44 feet).
On the south shore are the remains of a castle built by Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland (c.1362 - 1425).

 Loch Ard shipwreck
The Loch Ard disaster is probably the best known of all Victorian shipwrecks.
Built in Glasgow, by Barclay, Curdle and Co. in 1873, the Loch Ard was a three masted square rigged iron sailing ship.
By this time the Loch Ard was among the breakers, and the tall cliffs of Mutton Island rose behind the ship.

Loch Ard was a steel clipper ship built on the Clyde by Barclay, Curle and Company, and was launched on the 8th.
She was 1,693 tons, with a length of 263 feet and 7 inches, a beam of 38 feet and 3 inches, drawing 22 feet, a handsome clipper as were most of her contemporaries, carrying three masts reaching upwards some 150 feet.
The tragedy of the Loch Ard is but one of the threads that go to make up the quilt that may be woven about all the ships that started out on their voyage,to end up as one more victim on this beautiful but highly dangerous coastline of Southern Victoria, the Shipwreck Coast.

 The Wreck of the Loch Ard
One of the worst was the story of the Loch Ard.
In 1878, the Loch Ard set sail from England for Melbourne, with 18 passengers and 36 crew.
Nowadays, if you drive down the Great Ocean Road to Loch Ard Gorge, you can see the place where Tom rescued Eva, see the graves where a few victims were buried, and find out more about the story.

Almost 40 years since it was taken from its resting place on a shipwreck off Victoria's south west coast, the bell from the clipper Loch Ard has been returned to heritage officials by an anonymous diver.
The lead and bronze bell, engraved with the words "Loch Ard", was accepted yesterday by State Planning Minister Mary Delahunty, whose responsibilities include Victoria's heritage.

Posted - 08 February 2002 : 4:31:50 PM Had the chance to dive the Loch Ard on the 07/02/02, this invite came about from one of the locals who wanted to see what the wreck actually looked like as he was solely a fisherman, and hated the idea of diving.
Being the first time out the Loch Ard I was simply amazed how beatiful that part of the coast is. The swell is one of the major issues pending the dive and is regulary canceled.
The Loch lays in a max depth of 24mts.
