Osprey Cam Web Log 2006: Loch Garten Ospreys
Ospreys are very special birds to the people of Britain because egg collecting and hunting had once driven the raptors to extinction there, but now they are coming back.
Loch Garten was the first place in Britain where ospreys made their official comeback after it was believed they were extinct (there is currently some controversy about whether they were completely extinct or whether a couple osprey pairs had remained in isolated areas; but if so, they were in very small numbers).
All of these are on the doorstep of Loch Garten as the Osprey Centre is situated in the middle of the Abernethy Forest, an enormous reserve covering 33,400 acres (13,500 hectares) which stretches from the tree-lined valley floor to the montane high plateaux of the Cairngorms.

Trees for Life - Species Profile: Osprey
Ospreys can be seen in most parts of the UK during their spring and autumn migrations, but the core breeding population is in the Scottish Highlands, in areas with Scots pine forests, rivers and freshwater lochs.
In the UK the osprey was red-listed as a species of high conservation concern for many years, but has recently been downgraded to the amber list, of medium conservation concern, because of the expansion of the breeding population.
Ospreys pair for life and nests are used year after year, with large ones being up to a metre in width and height.

 Wildlife Britain News
The UK population of the bird is restricted to remote lochs in north and west Scotland.
Those lochs with a good supply of small brown trout and Arctic charr (the staple diet of the adult birds) and of minnows and sticklebacks (ideal for chicks) are most likely to support successfully nesting divers.
Lochs usually lack fish either because of unsuitable water conditions or because predatory pike have been introduced and have removed many of the smaller fish that the divers rely on for food.
