To start at the southern end of Loch Lomond, the sluice gates at Balloch on the River Leven which control the water level in the loch.
She is the largest freshwater paddle steamer in Britain and the last paddle steamer built here, in 1953, six years after the better known Waverly which is the last sea going paddle steamer.
She is presently being restored with the aim of her steaming the loch again but for now she has a nice café/restaurant and can be looked around at her berth.

It is not exactly isolated - the main A82 trunk road from Glasgow to the highlands runs through the middle of the glen, the present road dating from major improvements in the 1930's.
The glen begins at the corner of Rannoch Moor in the east, and runs generally due west to emerge at Glencoe village on the shore of Loch Leven.
On the south side of the glen is the fine mountain group of Bidean nam Bian, the highest peak in the former county of Argyll; the dramatic cone of Buachaille Etive Mor (the Great Shepherd of Etive) lays on the same side of the glen just a handful of miles to the east.

Having said that and dragged my brain out of Methil, Leven's indutrial neighbour, I suppose it's not that bad.
Loch Lomond's on the other side of the coutry and and uncomfortable base for Edinburgh...

This is a long loch, about 30km long but only 2km wide most of the way.
Most of the highlands were carved out by glaciers, and they leave impressive traces.
Further on, around Loch Leven (near Glencoe) we came to Kinlochleven, and at this point the West Highland Way (i.e., major walkway through the West Highlands) crosses the road.
