LOCH SHIEL, a lake near the Atlantic seaboard of Scotland, lying between the district of Moidart in Inverness-shire and the districts of Ardgour and Sunart in Argyllshire.
The boundary line between the two counties is drawn lengthwise down the centre of the lake and is continued down the river Shiel to the sea.
For fully three-fourths of its length Loch Shiel has a south-westerly direction, but at Eilean Fhianain (Finnan's Island) it strikes towards the west.

Loch Shiel is a 25 km freshwater loch, 120 m deep, situated 20 km west of Fort William in Lochaber, Highland, Scotland.
Loch Shiel should not be confused with Glen Shiel, 40 km further north in Skye and Lochalsh, which contains a longer River Shiel and a much smaller Loch Shiel.
Loch Shiel is also used as Lake Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies, with Hogwarts itself placed next to the Loch through computer-generated imagery.

 Glenfinnan village, Scotland
The historical village of Glenfinnan is 17 miles west of Fort William on the A830 at the head of Loch Shiel.
On the loch shore an impressive monument was later built to commemorate the famous event and today this imposing structure provides an interesting visit and viewpoint from its turreted top.
Loch Sheil is a long fresh-water loch which lies west of the village.

 Glenfinnan Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland
Glenfinnan lies at the head of Loch Shiel, stretching south west for twenty miles to Acharacle, where it fails by a mere two miles to meet the sea.
In 1896 a mail steamer began a service along the loch to connect Acharacle with the railway at Glenfinnan.
This service sadly ceased in the 1960s, though cruises on Loch Shiel are still run from the Glenfinnan House Hotel in Summer.

Accessible only by boat, Loch Shiel is one of Scotland's most historically significant and unspoiled natural treasures.
One of the Loch's more elusive inhabitants is "Seilag" the Loch Shiel Monster, of which there have been several sightings over the years.
As the Loch is one of Scotland's deepest (137m) there is ample room for monsters to avoid detection: so far Seilag hasn't been spotted from MV Sileas but we keenly anticipate a friendly encounter some day.

Since the early eighties there has been an excellent choir in Acharacle, a small village at the South End of Loch Shiel 50 miles from Fort William in the West of Scotland.
The Loch Shiel Singers, as the choir is called, were soon undertaking much more ambitious work, and at the start of 1997 Patrick suggested the festival.
So the Festival started, with six concerts, two of which were performed by the Choir, augmented and renamed for the occasion as the Loch Shiel Festival Choir.

Acharacle is a small Highland village on the shore of Loch Shiel with the Loch Shiel House Hotel at its centre close to the general store, post office, café and outdoor shop.
The A861 passes through the centre of Acharacle from the Corran Ferry in the East and Lochailort and Mallaig (A830) to the north and west.
The scenery along the entire length of this road is spectacula, passing along the edge of Loch Sunart from the ferry and then cutting across at Salen to Acharacle past Loch Shiel and on to Loch Moidart and Loch Ailort.

From Fort William go west on the the A830 until you reach the Glenfinnan Monument at the head of Loch Shiel.
From the large car park cross the road and follow the path to the monument and the location can be seen from the edge of the loch directly in front of you.

I had a much better feel about Loch Shiel than I would have had with just the music.

A monument marks the spot where the ill-fated adventure began, now one of the most photographed views in Scotland.
Close by and sharing that view is the Church of St Finan where many of the Loch Shiel Spring Festival concerts take place.
There is a railway station close by, visited daily by the steam train in the summer and cruises on Loch Shiel, aboard the M.V. Sileas, leave from here daily.

However, the original route was diverted when the level of Loch Clunie was raised for a hydro-electric scheme.
