Lochgelly Splint Coal was partly burnt in the ground just to the west of Powguild Plantation and the Swallowdrum Coal (known locally as the 'Duddie Davie') was a composite seam which lay 3 to 10 fathoms above the Lochgelly Splint.

The band’s long day started at around midday setting up the Lochgelly Centre for a concert in the evening, and when this was complete the first part of the band’s 150th anniversary celebrations kicked off with a reunion of former band members.
Davie joined Lochgelly Band at the age of 13 and can actually be seen in some of the pictures in the band hall as a fresh-faced youngster with James Sinclair.
For the last 150 years the Lochgelly Band have enjoyed performing for the people of Lochgelly and a gala concert was felt to be a very fitting way to continue the celebrations.

This may have been done to try and replace the local senior team Lochgelly United, who were floated on the stock market as a PLC in 1920 with great success until the market crash in 1927 and the great depression.
Lochgelly Albert's first football game within the junior ranks was on the 29th July 1933, away to Kirkford Juniors at Beathview Park, Cowdenbeath and resulted in a 1-0 victory to Lochgelly Albert, the goal was scored in the 88th minute by Pat Finnerty.
Lochgelly Albert's first trophy arrived in the season 1934-35, this was the Fife Cup and the Albert were victorious over Rosslyn Juniors at Stark's Park, Kirkcaldy, the current home of Raith Rovers, the final score being Lochgelly Albert 2 Rosslyn Juniors 0.

You have to appreciate that the Co-operative in Lochgelly had about 30 working horses at this time so there was plenty of work for G.W.Dick & sons and James Heggie even without the Lochgelly Tawse.
But things go on and so does this business unfortunately my brother has not been able to continue due to Multiple Sclerosis and the shop in Cowdenbeath was sold sometime ago but I returned to the fold after 10 years in Engineering and attempted to absorb as much knowledge as I could before Dad retired.

East Fife and Lochgelly United played each other regularly in the years following the Fifers' formation in 1903 up until shortly before the demise of the west Fife club in the late 1920's.
United were formed in 1890 from the amalgamation of Lochgelly Athletic and Fifeshire Hibernians and played initially at Schools Park.
The park was re-named West End Park in 1910 when it became the home of Lochgelly F.C., the town's short-lived second Senior side.

Mum was born in Lochgelly, Julia Williamson, daughter to Tim and Janet Williamson of Small Street.
My mother was born in Lochgelly (68 Lumphinans Road) in 1927, but her family moved to Kelty shortly afterwards, where her father started a coal merchants business behind 'Braehead Cottage' - which used to be at the top of the hill in Kelty, beside the police station.
