The Lochnagar Crater, at La Boiselle, is privately owned by Richard Dunning, having been bought in 1978 to save at least one of the original 1 July 1916 Somme craters from being filled in and built upon by local farmers.
It was blown along with 16 others at 0728 on the morning of 1 July 1916 as a two-minute precursor to the start of the offensive.
The Lochnagar Crater measured 300ft across and 90ft deep (200ft wide and 81ft deep by 1919).

The north-bank distillery had closed by 1860 and Lochnagar continued to prosper although the Abergeldie Estates consistently refused to sell the distillery the grounds it occupied, preferring to see value being added to their land through the erection of extensions and new buildings necessary for Lochnagar’s continuing development.
Lochnagar has a lot of storage capacity for raw materials so that distilling can continue when the distillery is snowed in.

From the car park I walked towards the houses at Allt na-giubhsaich and took the Lochnagar path, which later merges with a vehicle track, to the highest point on the track.
She had climbed Lochnagar when she was 19 years of age and wanted to make a return visit.

The first Lochnagar distillery was burnt down in suspicious circumstances in 1824 and a replacement again burnt down in 1841.
Every part of the process is geared towards producing a light whisky, which begins in the malting stage where only a small amount of peat is used in the drying of the barley (1-2 parts per million (ppm) compared to say, Lagavulin, which uses 35ppm peated malt).
Royal Lochnagar only require to mash 4 times a week in order to produce sufficient quantities for their needs.

Until you reach the cliffs of Lochnagar there is little objective danger and the path is very big (Landrover track) - the mountain is also very busy and it's hard to get lost with loads of people around.

 Hillwalking Lochnagar Path in Royal Deeside near to Balmoral Estates, Aberdeenshire
The path initially starts at the entrance to the Balmoral Estates near a small post office and goes through some forestry and when coming to a junction in the path, take the left path for a few hundred yards and then we are in open country with Lochnagar visible in the distance.
I took the later and found it somewhat challenging since either rocks, heavy heather or boggy ground has to be negotiated.
However since faint heart never won the fair maiden, I struggled on, to be rewarded with the awesomeness and magnificence that is Lochnagar.

Most Munro-baggers tackle Lochnagar from the Spittal of Glenmuick at the end of the public road that runs up Glen Muick from Ballater.
This is a much longer route than the others but I think it gives a better sense of the vastness of the great plateaux that run south from Lochnagar towards the Glenshee hills.

This eastern neighbour of dark Lochnagar is a Corbett, a Scottish hill between 2,500ft and 2,999ft, an easy Corbett at that.
Its ascent shares the same tourist route to Lochnagar from Allt-na-giubhsaich as far as the high point of the track that runs between the Spittal of Glenmuick and Glen Gelder.
Having said that, compared to the wide Lochnagar track this one up Conachcraig is narrower than a sheep trod and, since it didn't go any further than the summit cairn, I guessed most Corbett-baggers simply bag the top and return the same way, probably as an addendum to a Munro-day on Lochnagar.

After being told we were 'irresponsible' by a dear old lady (who was a member of a rambling club) for going any further than the toilet block, we set off up the track towards Lochnagar shrouded in low cloud and mist.
It was a jolly nice walk, a bit disconcerting that you couldnt actually see your hand in front of your face but we were on a good path and were confident in our nav skills.
By god, I have never known a car seat to be so close to comfort of the heavenly status but the hour and a quarters drive home was spent just sitting back almost wishing I was doing the whole thing again the next day!

This humorous little film, produced in Wales for British and American television, effectively tells its tale with fairly decent animation and an often whimsical script.
The film is based on a 1980 story by Britain's Prince Charles - "The Old Man of Lochnagar" - and the original illustrations of Sir Hugh Casson.
The Prince appears in live action segments which bookend the cartoon, relating the Legend with a serious royal demeanor which delightfully is smashed during the film's final moments.
