  LOCKS - History
Using designs of coats-of-arms and symbolic shapes, they devised intricate wards and bits for locks and keys and were inspired to produce increasingly ornamental locks to harmonize with the architecture of their clients' estates or castles.

The dial locks were similar in operation, and both types were combinated to unlock to words or patterns of numbers known only to the owners or responsible persons.

Canal lock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Locks used on canals allow the negotiation of hills without recourse to lengthy detours, or the use of tunnels or aqueducts.
The same kind of locks are used on rivers, often in connection with dams since there is generally a difference in water level between the upstream side of a dam and the downstream side.
The 29 locks on the Mississippi River are typically 600 foot (180 m) long while tug and barge combinations are as much as 1200 feet (360 m) long consisting of as many as 15 barges and one tug.

Locks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The lock may be considered as a mechanical machine, it is after all raising and lowering heavy loads, just as crane might do; it takes in energy, in the form of water stored at a high level, and uses it to move loads up and down.
As the lock is filled, the ferocity of the motion of the water reduces, as if the first part of the water has to fall all of the way to the lower level, and the last part falls hardly at all; we might say that the average fall is one half of the level difference.
In place of the pound between the two locks, the level is determined by a side pond, which is connected by separate culverts to the top paddles of the lower lock and to the bottom paddles of the upper lock.

Locks were built to two main sets of dimensions, known as narrow locks and broad locks, though there are many locks with larger dimensions, especially on the river navigations.
Broad locks may be designed to fit two narrowboats side by side as at Hatton on the Grand Union Canal on the right, or may be designed for barges of about 65 foot long and 14 foot beam, as on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
Early canals placed locks wherever there was a contour change in the landscape, so that the canal channel could be built as easily as possible, and the spacing between locks varied greatly.

A transaction typically gets an Update Lock when it is about to read in preparation for a write, as in a data-change statement or as signaled by a query’s FOR UPDATE clause.
