afrol News: Italy again promises to return Axum obelisk
The accident has made the monument even more fragile as more of the superficial carved geometrical motifs could flake off.
Further complicating the transport is that there are only two types of aircrafts being able to transport such a heavy and large item; the American Lockheed C5-A Galaxy and the Russian Antonov An-124.
There however remains the problem that the airfield in Axum is too short for these airplanes to land on and further details of a transport back thus still remain an open question.

The first wide-body aircraft was the four-engined Boeing 747 which debuted in 1969 and is still the largest in service, although the Airbus A380 will be larger still when it enters service in 2005.
Slightly smaller and shorter ranged three-engined wide-bodies followed in the early 1970s - the Douglas DC-10 and the Lockheed Tristar - then the twin-engined Airbus A300 in 1974.
The United States and the Soviet Union both produced dedicated military wide-body transports: the Lockheed C5, the Ilyushin Il-76, and the McDonnell Douglas C-17.

The Beluga (also known as the A300-600ST Super Transporter) has the most voluminous cargo hold of any civil or military aircraft flying today, offers a unique way to transport oversized air cargo.
Developed to carry complete sections of Airbus aircraft from different production sites around Europe to the final assembly lines in Toulouse or Hamburg, its main-deck cargo volume is greater than the Lockheed C5 Galaxy, the Antonov An-124 or the Boeing C-17 airlifter.
There may be aircraft that can carry heavier loads (the aforementioned An-124, the Boeing 747 and the C-5), but none have a comparable internal volume.
