The Lockheed Company, one of the giants in the modern aerospace industry, began in 1912 when the Loughead brothers, Allan and Malcolm, formed the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company in San Francisco.
The Model 10 Electra was followed by the Model 12 Electra Junior executive transport in 1936 that seated six passengers with a two-person crew.
The 1937 Lockheed 14 Super Electra, designed to compete with the Douglas DC-2 and DC-3, failed as a commercial aircraft in the United States because it had too small a capacity.

Fortunately, Allan Lockheed was not easily discouraged and in 1926 he and others formed the Lockheed Aircraft Company to produce a new high-wing monoplane designed by talented aircraft designer John Knudsen Northrop.
Lockheed had won a Department of Defense design competition for the huge aircraft that was the forerunner of the famous family of airlifters known throughout the world.
Following the death of Robert E. Gross, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation's chairman of the board and chief executive officer on September 3rd, 1961, Daniel J. Haughton was elevated to the presidency of the corporation.

The Lockheed L-188 Electra II certainly stands in the running as the crowning achievement of the age of the propeller-driven airliner.
Perhaps my good opinion of the Lockheed Electra II results in part from the fact that it was the first airliner I ever flew on.
The introduction of faster, more economical jet airliners also doomed the Electra II as a passenger transport, although it still flies in various commercial applications throughout the world, and variants of the design are used by many military organizations.

The Lockheed L-188 Electra was developed to meet a 1954 American Airlines requirement for a domestic short to medium range 75 to 100 seat airliner.
Lockheed undertook a significant modification program where the nacelles, nacelle mountings and wing structure were strengthened, and the speed restrictions were eventually lifted in 1961.
From 1967 Lockheed converted 41 Electras to freighters or convertible freighter/passenger aircraft, fitting a strengthened floor and a large cargo door forward of the wing on the left side.

Lockheed airplanes first gained fame in the bands of pilots like Wiley Post, who took the rotund, wooden Vega and set records for speed, altitude and distance over every corner of the globe.
Chapeau was operating three or four of the Lockheeds, which came to the immediate attention of a noted French aviation buff who purchased all of the assets of the airline.
The Lockheed 12 is one of those airplanes that has always stuck out in many pilots' minds and it was no exception with me. Fortunately, Lou is as eager to show his airplane off so yet another long-cherished dream came to be satisfied.

Not long after the Electra entered service, there were three crashes, two of which involved wing separation (the other was attributed to pilot error).
John Margwarth, another University of Michigan man, was director of safety for Lockheed, and it was his insight that led to an investigation revealing that the Electra's fatal flaw was in the three member structure connecting the gearbox and the engine, a part supplied by the engine manufacturers.
Lockheed was rocked by the three crashes and their adverse publicity.

Lockheed then went on to produce a similar but "bigger and better" ocean patrol aircraft, the "PV-1 Ventura", based on the Lodestar transport, which was basically a stretched Electra with uprated engines.
The Navy was interested in the Lockheed proposal, giving the company a "letter of intent" in February 1943, and on 4 February 1944 awarded the company a contract for the development of two "XP2V-1" prototypes.
As noted, Lockheed had been considering a follow-on to the Hudson-Ventura family of medium patrol aircraft as far back as 1941, with commitment to development of the Neptune in early 1944.

Lockheed JO Electra Junior, R2O Electra, R3O Electra and Electra Junior, by Jack McKillop
Fortunately for Lockheed, the design was changed to a twin-engined transport because in October 1934, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) banned the transportation of passengers on scheduled services at night or over terrain unsuitable for emergency landings in single-engine airliners.
The Electra was a twin-engined, twin-tailed, low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear; the main landing gear retracted into the engine nacelles but the tail wheel did not retract.
The Electra had the same cruising speed as the Douglas DC-2 [R2D in U.S. Navy (USN) service, q.v.], and offered a high degree of comfort but its seat-mile cost was higher than the DC-2 and its limited capacity of ten passengers meant that its use was limited to smaller airlines.

Lockheed PBO Hudson, Lockheed R4O Super Electra, by Jack McKillop
The Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra, built by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation of Burbank, California, was a contemporary of the Douglas DC-2, designated R2D, q.v., in U.S. Navy (USN) service, but was a more advanced design with more powerful engines giving it a higher cruising speed.
Lockheed had determined that an aircraft larger than the Model 10 Electra, designated R2O and R3O, q.v., in USN and U.S. Coast Guard service, was required to compete against the DC-2 and DC-3.
The Model 14 was Lockheed's largest aircraft at the time and in an attempt to produce another plane, Lockheed began work on the Model 18 Lodestar which was designated R5O, q.v., in USN service.
