Hall Hibbard, Lockheed vice president and chief engine- er, saw the proposal and directed it to Kelly Johnson, who remarked when he saw the proposal, "If you sign that letter, you will destroy the Lockheed Company." Both Hibbard and Johnson signed the proposal and the company got the contract on July 2, 1951.
The C-130 H-30 (Hercules C.3 in RAF service) is a stretched vers- ion of the original Hercules, achieved by inserting a 8.3 foot (2.54 m) plug aft of the cockpit and a 6.7 foot (2.03 m) plug at the rear of the fuselage.

Apparently the Hercules was hit because eyewitnesses reported seeing the aircraft shake violently out of control, then turn and crash in an eruption of smoke and fire in a nearby ravine, approximately 1 mile from the end of the airstrip.

The Boxcar was manufactured from 1948 to 1953 and had proved inadequate for the needs of the Far East Air Forces Combat Cargo Command during the Korean War.
The new aircraft was to be capable of slowing to 125 knots, dropping heavy loads by parachute, landing on short/unimproved combat air strips, suitable for assault transport operations, and able to carry single items weighing up to 30,000 lb.
