 Lockheed L-188 Electras
The Lockheed L188 Electra has the distinction of being the only large American turboprop airliner.
The existing Electras continued to boast excellent reliability and economics, and were not replaced until modern short-range jets became available.
American and Eastern placed the first orders (for 35 and 40 planes, respectively), and American received the first Electra on December, 1958 (although it could not fly the first service due to a strike, and Eastern was left with this honor).

 Lockheed L-188 Electra
The design of the Lockheed L-188 Electra began in 1954, and in the following year the company received a launching order for the airplane from American Airlines.
About half of the total airplanes built remained in service in the early 1990s, many of them converted by Lockheed Aircraft Service for convertible passenger/cargo or all-cargo use.
A total of 170 airplanes had been built when production ended unexpectedly early as a result of passenger loss of confidence in the aircraft after two had disintegrated in flight, and by the time remedial modifications had been incorporated customer airlines were interested in turbojet rather than turboprop aircraft.

Lockheed 188 Electra (Great Airliners Series, Vol. 5)
The "Great Airliners Series", although small in numbers, generally includes very good airliner references, kudos to Jon Proctor - the Editor of the Series - for the achievements, and the "Lockheed 188 Electra" is definitely a book that will remain for me on the top shelf.
Whether you are an Electra fan, interested in airliners history or an airliner buff, this book will be a very good candidate for you to own.
The period of the Electra II (or Super Electra) follows in the 4th chapter with a very good list of the airline operators while the other operators are listed in the 5th chapter.

Lockheed and Langley flutter experts were concerned that the propeller driven Electra may have exhibited the phenomenon known as propeller-whirl flutter, in which the stiffness of the engine mounts interacts with the gyroscopic torques produced by the engine and propeller combination.
Lockheed proposed a militarized version of the Electra, and in April 1958, the Navy awarded Lockheed a contract to develop the aircraft.
Over 170 Electras were built by Lockheed and delivered to U.S. and South American airlines.

 American Airlines L-188 Electra
The Lockheed L-188 Electra was first developed in response to a request by American Airlines for a medium-size short-haul airliner for US domestic routes.
Although the Electra's life span as an air liner was short, the efficiency of the tuboprop caught the attention of the US Navy which continues to make extensive use of the air frame under the designation P-3 Orion.
Most Electras were retired from airline service in mid the 1970s as the faster tubojets replaced them.

The Electra's configuration was that of a low-wing monoplane, with a conventionally constructed fuselage of circular cross-section, and a tricycle type retractable landing gear with twin wheels on each unit.
The History which the Lockheed had gained in the design, developed and early production of the turbo prop-powered C-130 Hercules for the USAF undoubtedly influenced the company's choice of this basic powerplant for turbine-engine airliners to enter service in the late 1950's.
By that time, however, Lockheed had accumulated orders for 144 production aircraft, and it must have seemed that they were set for a long production run.
