Clarence "Kelly" Johnson testing an Electra model in the University of Michigan's wind tunnel.
The Lockheed L-10 Electra was a twin-engine, all-metal monoplane developed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s to compete with the the Boeing 247 and Douglas DC-2.
Many Electras, and descendants of the design, were impressed into military during World War II (as the C-36 with the USAAF).

The Lockheed C-40 was based on the commercial Model 12 Electra Junior.
The Model 12 was essentially a scaled down version of the Lockheed Model 10 Electra.
The Model 12 was designed initially as a small commercial airliner capable of carrying 5 or 6 passengers.

The Electra Junior Model 12A (there was no plain Model 12) was similar in outline and construction to the Model 10, but was smaller and slimmer.
A notable disadvantage for the passengers, inherited from both the Model 10 and the Boeing 247, was that the main wing spar passed through the cabin.
Lockheed planned to use the model 12A both as a feeder airliner and as an executive transport, and interiors with lounges, desks and other required customer custom features were options.

While Lockheed was receiving marvelous press because of Earhardt’s and Hughes notoriety back in Burbank California, the Lockheed Super Electra Model 14 began to appear as a flawed star on the dramatic stage of aviation performance.
On June 23rd, 1938, Great Britain ordered 200 Super Electra’s from Lockheed, that were modified to a light bomber, and renamed by the Air Ministry the, ‘Hudson’ Bomber, after the lost explorer, Hendrik Hudson, a sea captain whose crew mutinied on him, then set him adrift off the shores of the Ungava in Canada.

Lockheed JO Electra Junior, R2O Electra, R3O Electra and Electra Junior, by Jack McKillop
The JOs were Lockheed Model 12-A Electra Juniors; the R2O was a Model 10-A Electra; and contrary to standard practice, the two R3Os were a Model 10-B Electra and a Model 12-A Electra Junior.
Fortunately for Lockheed, the design was changed to a twin-engined transport because in October 1934, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) banned the transportation of passengers on scheduled services at night or over terrain unsuitable for emergency landings in single-engine airliners.

The wheel was standing on end and was roughly 12 inches across the rim and perhaps 15 inches tall.
Greg's recollection is that the diameter of the rim was approximately 12 inches.
As shown in this photo of the Goodyear Airwheel on Lockheed 10A c/n 1052 at the New England Air Museum, the diameter of the "outboard" side of the Electra wheel is 8 inches in diameter and is, in Greg's opinion, a bit too small.

Model 212: this was a bomber/trainer that had a manually swung, midfuselage dorsal turret with a single.303-- caliber machine gun plus a fixed,.303-- caliber gun in the nose.
The prototype Model 212 (12A NC18955) was sold to Western Air Express, but was then bought back to become a military model flying on an experimental license as NX18955; as such, it was given a new factory serial number (212-13).

Lockheed L-212 Electra Junior with Gun Turret Review by Glen Porter (Special Hobby 1/72)
Special Hobby have already released the Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior (Earhart's aircraft) in fact I think I saw one presented here on Hyperscale recently in her colours.
There are two turrets (one spare) and although there are two canopies, one is for the civilian Model 12 and not used here.
The only nit I could pick with this kit is the cavity for the dorsal turret which has to be opened by the modeller although the instructions do show you where and how big it should be.

By using the same amount of power in a scaled down aircraft the Electra Junior delivered high performance with a high power to weight ratio.
Normally, the Model 12 carried two pilots and up to six passengers but decreasing the passenger complement benefited range through increased fuel.

The Model 18 was a twin-engined, all-metal, low-wing monoplane with retractable main landing gear; the tail wheel did not retract.
Unfortunately, the Model 18 had to compete with the Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior, designated JO and R3O, q.v., in USN service, and the Model 18 was underpowered when compared to the Lockheed machine making it undesirable to U.S. airlines.
The second version of the Model 18 was the B18S, the B prefix indicating the second version and the S suffix indicating the powerplant.
