The Lockheed Company, one of the giants in the modern aerospace industry, began in 1912 when the Loughead brothers, Allan and Malcolm, formed the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company in San Francisco.
The Orion, which featured the NACA cowling and retractable landing gear, was a wooden monoplane that could carry a pilot and six passengers.
The 1937 Lockheed 14 Super Electra, designed to compete with the Douglas DC-2 and DC-3, failed as a commercial aircraft in the United States because it had too small a capacity.

Lockheed built variants of the T-33 included the AT-33, an armed close air support version delivered to various nations under MAP, and the RT-33, a single seat variant with various reconnaissance sensors in the nose.
Lockheeds submission was based on a shortened Electra airliner and this aircraft was selected for development in April 1958.
Lockheed has worked to reduce assembly costs, adopting a modular assembly process, and has also kept pressure on its suppliers (who also have a financial stake in the program through funding the development of their own products for the C-130J) to keep costs down.

Lockheed proposed a militarized version of the Electra, and in April 1958, the Navy awarded Lockheed a contract to develop the aircraft.
The Orion retained the wings, tail unit, basic fuselage structure, power plant, and many subsystems of the Electra, although its fuselage was about 7 ft. shorter than the Electra’s.
Lockheed and Langley flutter experts were concerned that the propeller driven Electra may have exhibited the phenomenon known as propeller-whirl flutter, in which the stiffness of the engine mounts interacts with the gyroscopic torques produced by the engine and propeller combination.

The first Lockheed Orion was flown in April 1931 by chief test pilot Marshall Headle and speeds of 225mph were achieved.
The Orion was billed as the 'fastest airliner in the world' and was the first airliner in the world to use a retractable undercarriage.
The Orions were highly successful and safe aeroplanes but government restrictions on the use of single engined aircraft brought the airline career to a halt in 1934, although some continued working as mail and cargo planes.

The enterprising brothers Loughead (that's pronounced "Lockheed," by the way) sensed the market in mid-1930 for a light transport as air travel and transport began to gain importance.

Detroit Aircraft Corp., of which Lockheed in Burbank, California, became a division, built duralumin fuselages to be used in place of the more fragile plywood units.
This special Orion was purchased by Shell Oil for Jimmy Doolittle (because of Doolittle's persuasion) after his heavily overloaded Vega had been damaged in an unsuccessful takeoff.
Damaged in an accident in 1936, the 9C Orion was repaired at Parks Air College in St. Louis, Missouri, before being purchased by movie and racing specialist Paul Mantz in 1938.

Designed as a land-based anti-submarine maritime patrol aircraft to replace the P2V Neptune, the P-3 is derived from the Lockheed L-188 Electra passenger airliner.
Externally, the only significant differences between the Electra and the P-3 are inclusion of an unpressurized weapons bay forward of the wing, a shortened fuselage, and addition of a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) boom at the tail.
The Orion has proven very popular with foreign nations and has been operated by at least 13 navies.

The Lockheed Martin P-3 AEW Orion was developed using ex-Royal Australian Air Force and US Navy P-3B airframes, combined with the APS-125 Radar and Mission System (later retrofitted with an APS-138 system) from the United States Navy E-2 Hawkeye carrier-borne AEW&C aircraft.
The United States Customs Service, which is at this time the sole user of the P-3 AEW, took delivery of the first one in 1988 and since 1993 has been operating a fleet of four aircraft for counter-narcotics missions in the US particularly over the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
Other radars fitted to the P-3 AEW to fulfill the counter-narcotics mission includes the Hughes APG-63U, derived from the radar used in early model F-15 Eagle fighters.

David Reade's 223 page hardcover does an excellent job of telling the story of the Lockheed P3 Orion from its late 50s origins as a modified Electra passenger airliner to the present day P3C.
All major modifications of the Orion and all the countries that fly them are covered, and perhaps this is the only true weakness of the book.
It's such a huge story that giving detailed comprehensive coverage to 'rare' variants and foreign operators of relatively few aircraft takes valuable page space away from the standard USN antisubmarine patrol aircraft that this writer knows and loves (I'm a P3 EWO in the US Navy Reserve).
