Locomotive is available as a Universal Binary - native to both PowerPC and Intel architectures (It does, however, require Mac OS X 10.3 or later).
Locomotive uses "Bundles", each of which is a self-contained installation of Ruby, Rails, and all the necessary support software and libraries (as well as many useful optional tools!).

Locomotive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the locomotive hauled a train of 10 tons of iron and 70 passengers in five wagons over nine miles it was too heavy for the cast iron rails used at the time.
Diesel trains or locomotives that use this are called diesel-mechanical and began to appear (although limited in power) even before the first world war which saw a number of simplex diesel systems built for the war, a small number of which survive and are still operational today.
Dual-mode diesel-electric/third-rail locomotives are operated by the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad between non-electrified territory and New York City because of a local law banning diesel-powered locomotives in Manhattan tunnels.

LNER Class A3 4472 Flying Scotsman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The LNER Class A3 Pacific locomotive number 4472 "Flying Scotsman" (originally no. 1472) was built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway at Doncaster Works to a design of Sir Nigel Gresley.
In 1995 the locomotive was in pieces and was facing an uncertain future at Southall depot in West London due to the enormous cost of restoration and refurbishment necessary to meet the stringent engineering standards required for main line operation today.
In the story, Flying Scotsman had two tenders, which is a reference to the locomotive's tour of the United States, when a second tender was added to carry extra water.

locomotive. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The reciprocating steam locomotive is a self-contained power unit consisting essentially of a steam engine and a boiler with fuel and water supplies.
Steam locomotives are usually classified under the Whyte system, that is, by the number and arrangement of the wheels; for example, an engine classified as 2–6–0 has one pair of wheels under the front truck, three pairs of coupled or driving wheels, and no wheels under the trailing truck.
Electric railroad locomotives are used chiefly on steep grades and on runs of high traffic density; although highly efficient they are not more widely used because of the cost of electric substations and overhead wires or third rails.

 Baldwin #60,000
Locomotive 60,000, the subject of the present publication, was designed and built by The Baldwin Loco-motive Works as an experiment to ascertain the gain in efficiency by the use of high pressure steam and high ratios of expansion.
Locomotive Number 60,000: This illustration shows the general arrangement of the cylinders and steam chests, and also of the two valve motions on the right-hand side, which control the steam distribution to the center and right-hand cylinders respectively.
Through the courtesy of the Pennsylvania Railroad the locomotive was submitted to an extensive program of tests on their locomotive test plant at Altoona, and it was subsequently given road tests on this line and on a number of other prominent railroads.

UP: Union Pacific Bases First Hybrid Locomotive in California
The hybrid locomotive has been designated by the California Air Resources Board as an "ultra low-emitting locomotive" because its exhaust emissions are significantly lower than the current Environmental Protection Agency requirements for locomotive emissions.
Locomotive emissions regulations are currently in their third level or "tier" since inception in 2000, with each level being increasingly stringent in allowable amounts of nitrous oxides and particulate matter in locomotive exhaust.
The original hybrid test locomotive was nicknamed "Green Goat" for its environmentally symbolic green paint scheme by its builder, Railpower Technologies, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
