Duplex locomotive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A duplex locomotive is a steam locomotive that divides the driving force on its wheels by using two pairs of cylinders rigidly mounted to a single locomotive frame; it is not an articulated locomotive.
A four-cylinder locomotive can be completely balanced in the longitudinal and vertical axes, although there are some rocking and twisting motions which can be dealt with in the locomotive's suspension and centering; a three-cylinder locomotive can also be better balanced, but a two-cylinder locomotive only balanced for rotation will surge fore and aft.
The locomotive was completed in May 1937 and managed to retain the same coupled wheelbase as the road's current 4-8-2s by having the second set of cylinders reversed, mounted alongside the firebox, and driving the second set of coupled wheels forwards.

Frame fractures were due to fatigue of the metal under variable stress after a large number of repetitions, and the, metal offered the least resistance to fracture when the loads producing the stresses alternated from plus to minus in range.
Although 'the frame· had been' stiffened up internally, compared with that of the conventional Q class engines from which the design was developed, the elimination of the platform was considered to be the cause of the distortion.

Steam locomotive basics - section 1, locomotive layout
This section on the basics of a steam locomotive takes you from the names and functions of each component, the features of their design, and ending with the importance of the mineral composition of a lump of coal or the water in the tender.
Beginning with the heart of a steam locomotive - its boiler - it is the most compact of all types of boiler in relation to the amount of steam that it produces.
On later locomotive boilers, these tubes are of two types, small ones of about 1¾ - 2¼ inches in diameter and large flues of 5 - 5½ inches diameter.

The Evolution of the American Locomotive.--Scientific American Supplement   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
All the early engines designed by Stephenson had frames made of bar iron, but about the year 1826 he adopted a composite frame; the frame connecting the wheels and supporting the boiler being of bar iron as usual, with the addition of a plate iron frame carrying the cylinders and motion, as seen in America.
This was called the "sandwich" frame and was used in England for many years, until the oak filling was finally discarded and the frames made of iron plates alone: Thus, the plate frame of the English locomotive of to-day is a development of the cylinder frame of America.
The early locomotives were contemptuously called "steam pots," by the stage coach and canal proprietors, and they, together with other interested parties, to say nothing of the large class of people who objected to innovations on general principles, made the work of the first railway mechanical engineers one of extraordinary difficulty.

To isolate the LED and resistor from the frame (needed for decoder control of the headlight) the printed circuit board traces must be cut on both sides just forward of where they connect to the frame.
If you are going to use the existing LED that came with the locomotive, simply solder the loose white wire from the decoder to the light board's left trace just forward of the cut, and the loose decoder blue wire to the light board's right trace, also just forward of the cut in the trace.

 Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe's CF7 Locomotive
After each locomotive conversion was completed, each unit spent anywhere from 8 to 16 hours having electrical load tests performed, and after these were completed, each unit was taken out to the field for a run from Cleburne to Dallas, TX to Cleburne.
As far as the locomotive roster was concerned, Santa Fe's F7 locomotives utilized the EMD 567B prime mover.
CF7 #2638 was the first locomotive to refitted with the angled cab and fitted with standardized doors, and thus saving Santa Fe 50% of the cost of custom-fitted doors found on the original units.

But since the locomotive had no speed adjustment, and no forward reverse control, and because stopping it usually meant a derailment it was short lived.
The E units were very heavy locomotives and had huge flywheels which helped it to over come the excess friction, but the SD7s which have very similar mechanism could not.
Since this locomotive needs to be able to move slowly all of the time and it will never be run with any other locomotives I decided it would be a perfect candidate.
