In the latter part of the 14th century, the southern part of the region was for several decades part of Wallachia.
At the end of the Crimean War, in 1856, by the Treaty of Paris, two districts of southern Bessarabia were returned to Moldova, Russia lost access to the Danube river.
Bessarabia's northern and southern districts (largely inhabited by Romanians and some Ukrainians and Germans) were exchanged with parts of Transnistria (the districts on the left or eastern bank of the Dniestr, largely inhabited today by Ukrainians and Russians).

The Southern Railway took a key role in expanding the 660 V DC third rail electrified network begun by the London and South Western Railway.
Withdrawal of ex-SR locomotives happened mainly towards the end of steam on the Southern Region (in 1967), the pre-Grouping designs having gone before then as electrification spread across the region.
Bulleid was also responsible for the mechanical part of the three electric locomotives (CC1-CC3, later British Railways Class 70) built at Ashford Works in 1941 (CC1) and 1948 (CC2-CC3).

This accident to a K class locomotive was caused by poor track, weak spring design and oscillation due to water surging in the tanks.
The outstanding feature of the Southern 'Pacifics' was the enclosure of the mechanism associated with the inside cylinder and all the valve gear in what was intended to be an oil-tight casing.
Appendix 2 describes the influential diesel-electric locomotives and Section 6 describes the rebuilt Pacifics which were aimed to be as near British Railway standards as possible and this was achieved by Jarvis at Brighton.

 The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway
The line was amalgamated along with four other major companies (the London and South Western Railway ; the South Eastern Railway; the London Chatham and Dover Railway; and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway), and a number of minor ones, into the Southern Railway by Act of Parliament with effect from 1st January 1923.
This was primarily due to the beautiful yellow ochre livery carried by the locomotives in the William Stroudley and Robert Billinton periods.
Several locomotives have been preserved and some are still running today on heritage railways.

In recent years, Southern Pacific's worst problem was the condition of its locomotive fleet.
As SP looks to the future on the locomotive side, it appears that about 4,400 hp may maximize starting tractive effort with a.c., while 6,000 hp for high speed service is where the economics start to kick in, at current pricing levels.
By the end of next year, Southern Pacific will have done heavy repair/rebuild on about 500 locomotives, with most of this work performed at the Denver Locomotive Shop (formerly called the Burnham Shop), which was completely renovated and upgraded a couple of years ago.

Known by their nick-name of Charlies this class of locomotives was designed as a wartime economy locomotive by Bulleid, making use of already existing patterns for many of their parts, as goods locomotives intended only for a short life.
It represents the final version of the goods 0-6-0 development on the Southern Railway (and for that matter, in the world) which can be traced through the examples preserved on the Bluebell Railway of the SER "O1", through the SECR "C" and SR "Q" classes.

The Railway Workshop at Mysore was established as a base workshop of the erstwhile Mysore State Railway in 1924.
Consequent to the transfer of few sections like Bangalore-Harihar and Yeshwanthapur-Hindupur to the State Railways, the workshop was expanded to the present form in 1938 with the task of maintaining the MG and NG rolling stock in the then undivided Mysore and Guntakkal divisions.

takes a close and personal look at the Southern Railway through his own photography in the period 1960-1982, with some photos from others going back to about 1950.
Some "roster" or "portrait" type photos are included but the bulk of the book comprises superb action photography with the locomotives and trains in a variety of settings.
Southern Railway hasn't been as well covered by books as some lines, but this book seeks to fill that gap in many ways, in the era of dieselization.

Last Southern Railway steam engine to operate in Atlanta, and one of the few ex-Southern steam engines still in existence.

The volunteer run Bluebell Line was the UK's first preserved standard gauge passenger railway, re-opening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line of the old London Brighton and South Coast Railway in 1960.
Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices.

The last chapter describes the work being undertaken to reclaim a vast amount of land and create what became known as the ''New Docks'' for the largest of ocean going liners and was due according to the publication to be opened in 1931.
This booklet titled ''Locomotives of the Southern''; was published in 1926 just after the first Lord Nelson Class was built and contains pictures and basic technical data of a number of classes but interestingly enough does not include any reference to the class designations such as C or N15.
