Coco de mer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica), the sole member of the genus Lodoicea, is a palm endemic to the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles.
Until the true source of nut was discovered in 1768, it was believed by many to grow on a mythical tree at the bottom of the sea; European nobles in the sixteenth century would often have the shells of these nuts cleaned and decorated with valuable jewels as collectibles for their private galleries.
The name of the genus, Lodoicea, is derived from Lodoicus, the Latinised form of Louis, in honour of King Louis XV of France.

 PACSOA - Lodoicea Germination
Reasons for the scarce and varying statements on Lodoicea germination are due no doubt to the seeds rarity, cost and size: the latter being a reason why many writers suggest planting the ungerminated seed directly into the ground in its permanent site.
If Lodoicea were to behave like its relatives then a depth of 1.5 metres should be ample as the first emergent leaf blade is normally between 1 and 1.5m long.
From the initiation of germination on the 8th August, 1986 until 25th May, 1987 when the leaf became obvious is a period of 289 days, a lengthy time-span for any seedling, but considering the size of the plant, its huge tuberous cotyledon and massive roots, it does not seem overly slow.

The Mystery of Maldive Coconut (Lodoicea maldivica)
Long before the Seychelles was settled, this palm grow on the coastal areas, where the fruit that falls from the palm sometimes float across the Indian Ocean and were picked up in the Maldivian waters.
In conclusion, even though Lodoicea maldivica, never existed or never grew in the Maldive Islands.
It could argue that the Maldives deserves the first name or surname of the Lodoicea maldivica for the historical reasons, namely peoples of these islands initially introduced the nut globally and locally using it in food and medicine for centuries.

The largest seed in the world, the nut of the coco-de-mer palm (lodoicea maldivica) that grows only on two of the 1500 Seychelles Islands, comes to maturity after many years.
Centuries before its origin was discovered the rare specimens that washed ashore in India were revered as religious relics, the female counterpart of the shankara stones on Hindu altars, and were often formed into sacred begging bowls, such as this example.
