Topic: Lodovico Giustini

Lodovico Giustini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Giustini was born in Pistoia, of a family of musicians which can be traced back to the early 17th century; coincidentally he was born in the same year as Bach, Scarlatti, and Handel.
Giustini's father was organist at the Congregazione dello Spirito Santo, a Jesuit-affiliated group, and an uncle, Domenico Giustini, was also a composer of sacred music.
Giustini's main fame rests on his collection of 12 Sonate de cimbalo di piano e forte detto volgarmente di martelletti, opus 1, published in Florence in 1732, which is the earliest music in any genre written specifically for the piano.

DENZIL WRAIGHT - Discography of Cristofori Fortepianos
In Giustini's published music of 1732 it was called a "cimbalo di piano e forte detto volgarmente di martelletti", and in Farinelli's will his 1730 piano made by Ferrini was described as a "cimbalo à martellino", literally a harpsichord with hammers.

Italian composer Lodovico Giustini's musical output is relatively small, consisting of only three arias composed for an oratorio, and a collection of twelve pianoforte sonatas that were published in Florence in 1732.
Although scholars have given very little attention to Giustini's works, these twelve sonatas bear the distinction of being the first music composed for the pianoforte.
She will discuss why Giustini chose to write for the pianoforte at the time of the instrument's greatest unpopularity, and why scholars have had such a difficult time determining the identity of Giustini's patron who was ultimately responsible for publishing the works.

Cristoforti call his instrument "harpsichord with soft and loud", or gravicembalo col piano e forte.
Soon, Lodovico Giustini had written for it, his sonata "for soft and loud harpsichord, commonly called mallet-harpsichord", about 1731 - and 12 more sonatas by 1732.
Cristoforti made little from his invention and was forced to go back to making harpsichords.

In his lifetime, Cristofori’s invention did not attract much attention, but a year after his death in 1731 a set of sonatas by Lodovico Giustini was published in Florence.
This set was marked ‘for soft and loud harpsichord’; and it was putting into use the resources of the pianoforte.

This beautifully produced release (yes, it's really a Koch release!) is centered on music from the library of the Counts of Schönborn-Wiesentheid in Franconia, with over half of the space devoted to excerpts from a collection of arias by Albinoni, repertoire quite rare on disc.
AZZOLINO BERNARDINO DELLA CIAJA (1671-1755): Sonata V in C, GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL (1685-1759): Partita in D Minor, DOMENICO SCARLATTI (1685-1757): Sonata in E Minor, K.81, LODOVICO GIUSTINI (1685-1743): Suonata V in D, BENEDETTO MARCELLO (1686-1739): Sonata in C Minor, DOMENICO ZIPOLI (1688-1726): Sonata I in B Minor.
This recital is built around its keyboard instrument - a copy of a very early fortepiano of 1726 made by Bartolomeo Cristofori, which produces a lovely, soft, veiled sound.
