 Northvegr - Rydberg's Teutonic Mythology
The vegetative force must not be conceived in accordance with modern ideas, as an activity separated from the matter by abstraction and at the same time inseparably joined with it, but as an active matter joined with the earthly matter.
To understand this expression (hitherto translated with "good complexion"), we must bear in mind that the Teutons, like the Hellenes and Romans, conceived the gods in human form, and that the image which characterises man was borne by the gods alone before man's creation, and originally belonged to the gods.
When Lodur had given Ask and Embla litur goða, an inner body formed in the image of the gods, a body which gives to their earthly tabernacle a human-divine type, they received from Hoenir the gift which is called óður.

The reasons for this claim is firstly that Ódin and Hönir are, when they are mentioned together, always accompanied by a third god, sometimes Lodur and sometimes Loki, and that the two latter gods by this analogy are one and the same.
Lodur, however, is not mentioned in the Poetic Edda except for in this passage, and Snorri does not mention him at all.
Snorri, as stated, does not even mention Lodur in his Edda, and cannot therefore support the claim that Loki and Lodur are one and the same.

Therefore, Lodur and Loki must be one and the same, and Heimdall's foe is in part responsible for the gifts given Ash and Elm.
In the Bellows translation of Voluspa, there's a footnote to the effect that Loki may have been the blending of two gods, one an older fire god, and that's why his gift to Ash and Elm takes the form it does.
It argues strongly against identifying Lodur with Loki as the evidence for that identification is slim at best and tends to rely on some faulty entymology in addition to the fact that he is companion to Odin and Honir on other occaisions.
