Loess Plateau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Loess Plateau is a plateau that covers an area of some 640,000 km² in the upper and middle parts of China's Yellow River.
Loess is the name for the silty soil that has been deposited by wind storms on the plateau over the ages.

In addition, revitalization of the Loess Plateau region cannot be explored as an option until issues such as chronic poverty and outward urban migration of the population are addressed.

 Loess Plateau --  Encyclopædia Britannica
Loess is a sedimentary deposit composed largely of silt-size grains that are loosely cemented by calcium carbonate.
The loess accumulated primarily during times that were colder and drier than present, and most of it was derived from desert areas to the west.
Loess is distributed throughout many areas of northern China, but the greatest concentrations of loess are found in central China north of the Ch'in Ling Shan mountain range along the...

Loess, pronounced "loose," is a gritty, porous, and finely-ground rock that's blown by the wind.
The new study of the Loess Plateau, published yesterday by Guo and colleagues in Nature, shows that the deposits are far older than previously thought, indicating that the geological and climatic conditions that produced the loess deposits existed as long as 22 million years ago.
The Loess Plateau, he says, "is famous for its alternating layers of soil and loess, which have been shown to reflect alternating periods of strengthened summer monsoons (more rain and more soil development) and weaker summer monsoons (less rain, and general increase of aridity during glacial times -- causing loess accumulation).

of all the gullies, which dissected the land surface in the loess plateau, stream, dry gullies and gullies have their definite shape and position, while the small gullies and other tiny gullies do not have definite shape and position, they will mostly disappear with the later erosion, few of them will become new gullies.

Runoff and Sediment Responses to Conservation Practices: Loess Plateau of China   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
To reduce soil erosion from the Loess Plateau, conservation practices, including tree planting, ridge construction between fields and around gullies, terrace and ditch construction perpendicular to the main slope, and dam construction are being implemented.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation practices to control runoff and sediment yield from paired watersheds in the hilly gully region of the Loess Plateau.
The advantage of the paired watershed approach is its sensibility in detecting differences in runoff and sediment transport by monitoring both watersheds during two periods, an initial period with no conservation practices and a treatment period with only one watershed subjected to conservation practices.
