Cineplex Entertainment LP, based in Toronto, Ontario, is a limited partnership which operates Canada's largest chain of movie theatres.
Cineplex also established a distribution unit, Cineplex Odeon Films, during this period; its assets were largely sold to Alliance Atlantis in 1998.
Onex was the controllng shareholder of both Loews Cineplex Theatres and Galaxy Cinemas at the time of the merger, but sold its interest in Loews in June 2004.

Loews Theatres, founded in 1904 by Marcus Loew, was the oldest theatre chain operating in North America until it merged with AMC Theatres on January 26, 2006.
It was noted for being the distribution arm and parent company for Hollywood giant Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) until, forced by a 1948 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the two split in 1954.
In 2005, AMC Theatres announced that it would merge with Loews Cineplex Entertainment and that the merged company would adopt the AMC name.

Loews has said that it still has to close over 300 theaters over the coming months, most of which are underperforming locations acquired in the Cineplex Odeon merger.
Loews Cineplex is not expected to be profitable next year nor in the year after that.

An integration committee will be formed in which Travis E. Reid, president and CEO of New York-based Loews Cineplex, and Brown will serve as co-chairs.
AMC and Loews said they expect the merger to close within six to nine months, subject to antitrust approval and financing completion.
