Lofa county is thought to have suffered the worst impact of the civil war and at least three quarters of its population has sought refuge in IDP camps or nearby countries.
The counties particulary affected are Lofa, Bong, Gran Gedeh, Cape Mount, Bomi, Monserado and Nimba.
A survey of the new arrivals from Lofa county was conducted in July in Cari 1 and 2 transit shelter by ACF (ACF, 07/02).

The fighting in Liberia’s Kolahun District in Lofa between the Liberian Government troops and the rebels have caused great suffering to tens of thousands of people and responsible for the destruction of infrastructures including private homes, public buildings, schools, hospitals and clinics.
In the part of the country (upper part of Lofa County) with the current fighting, whatever little infrastructure was left up to the end of the Liberian civil crisis (1997), has now been destroyed.
There is an estimated IDP population of 5,000 persons who have trekked through the forests and ended up in the lower part of Lofa County and in Bomi County, while there is a displaced population of 20,000 in Salayea District.

The IRC is in the process of reopening its office in Voinjama, the main town in Liberia’s remote Lofa County.
The IRC was forced to cease its activities and evacuate Lofa in March 2003 as heavy fighting rocked the area.
Given the high concentration of child combatants in Lofa, the IRC is establishing two interim care centers for the children who have found themselves caught up in this brutal conflict.

Meanwhile, the people of Lofa County are calling on the Liberian Government and international partners, specifically the Worldwide Fund, to assist in curbing the destruction of crops by driving away the elephants from their towns, villages and farms, to enable them rebuild their lives.

Starting this week, UNHCR is repatriating refugees to Lofa county through a more direct route that will more than halve the travelling time to Liberia's largest area of return.
