erick@the net - Log Periodic Antenna Design
In a nutshell, The log periodic is a broadband antenna whose caracteristics vary as a periodic function of the logarithm of the frequency (with period Log(Tao)).
This is a Java applet which calculates the dimensions and spacings of the elements needed to build a log periodic antenna, given tao, sigma and the lower and upper cutoff frequencies.
Sigma is a spacing factor, and together with Tao, determine the directivity of the antenna.

Log-periodic antenna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunication, a log-periodic antenna (LP, also known as a log-periodic array) is a broadband, multielement, unidirectional, narrow-beam antenna that has impedance and radiation characteristics that are regularly repetitive as a logarithmic function of the excitation frequency.
The length and spacing of the elements of a log-periodic antenna increase logarithmically from one end to the other.
Log-periodic antenna signal-gathering action compared to other antenna types.

TSCM Test Equipment - Antenna - Signal Acquisition
For a typical log periodic antenna (with 5 dB of gain) this would result in 64 measurement positions for each polarization for a total of 320 positions (assuming horizontal, vertical, diagonal, LHCP, and RHCP polarization).
A TSCM antenna is normally operated on a tripod until a spectral anomaly is identified.
The antenna being used must be operated in both a horizontal and vertical polarized position, and also in a 45-degree diagonal position for optimal signal detection.

 HF Log Periodic Antennas
A log periodic antenna requires each element center to be split and insulated from the supporting boom.
I tried to modify the antenna element spacing and lengths of traditional log periodic designs and was able to successfully optimize the antenna to give good 14-30 MHz performance without requiring additional passive elements.
If you choose to use other software to model log periodic antennas, make sure the software will correctly model the phasing transmission line that runs down the center of the boom and connects each element together.
