 How to grow Loganberry
The loganberry is, perhaps, the supreme bramble type of berry, as it is ideal for stewing, jam- and jelly-making, bottling, canning, juice extraction and wine making.
Opinions are divided as to whether the loganberry is a red-fruiting form of the common Californian flberry, Rubus ursinus vitifolius, or a seedling from a cross between the `Red Antwerp' raspberry and the American flberry 'Aughinburgh'.
Loganberries are self-compatible and yield heavy crops of blunt, firm, very juicy, deep red berries of a rich flavor, from August to September.

Although its impact was short-lived, the loganberry was possibly the most important berry crop in the Willamette Valley from 1910-25.
As the demand increased for the loganberries, more fields were planted; however, when inflation and excessively high sugar prices pushed up the price of the berries, customers rebelled.
By the late 1920s, the ups and downs of the economy caused many farmers to plant their fields with other crops and, in the late 1930s, the domes tic loganberry market was further reduced due to the introduction of boysenberries.

The mutation in 'Thornless Loganberry' turns out to be present only in the outer layer of cells, and when tissue originated from other layers (such as the roots or reproductive tissues) it lacked the mutant gene.
Its introduction was followed by a number of California hybrid berries: 'Boysenberry' (a cross of Loganberry by a wild dewberry), 'Phenomenal' (another flberry/raspberry hybrid, introduced by Luther Burbank), 'Youngberry' ('Phenomenal' x 'Austin Mayes'), and 'Olallieberry' ('Loganberry' x 'Youngberry').
