You are likely to see this genus referred to as Buddleia davidii in some horticultural publications but Buddleja davidii is the correct botanical name.
In addition this genus, formerly assigned to the family Loganiaceae has been split out into its own family called Buddlejaceae.
We still like to use buddliea as a common name for butterfly bush - read What's In a (Plant) Name for more on botanical nomenclature.

Loganiaceae are a family of flowering plants, belonging to order Gentianales.
Some classification schemes, notably Takhtajan's, break the Loganiaceae as described here into as many as four families: Strychnaceae, Antoniaceae, Spigeliaceae and Loganiaceae.
Recent DNA studies of the Gentianales have found strong support for Loganiaceae as a monophyletic clade containing 13 genera.

Roughly 500 accessions were sampled from major tribes of the Strychnaceae, Loganiaceae, Gelsemiaceae, Gentianaceae, Apocynaceae s.l., and Rubiaceae.
Surprisingly, Gentianaceae is in the basalmost position; it is also the only family (except for tribes Antonieae and Spigelieae in the Strychnaceae) that lack alkaloids.
Most of the traditional families in the Gentianales appear to be monophyletic, except for Strychnaceae and Loganiaceae.

Strychnine was the first alkaloid to be identified in plants of the genus Strychnos, Family Loganiaceae.
From the standpoint of biological diversity, it is the most important genus of the Loganiaceae family (6 p.1).
Strychnine is a poisonous alkaloid, C21H22N2O2, obtained in colorless or white rhombic crystals, which have a bitter taste and melt at around 290(C. Strychnine is of the genus strychnos, of the family Loganiaceae first created by Linnaeus in 1753, containing 196 species of plants.

Leaves are in whorls of three, but occasionally are opposite and rarely alternate in their arrangement, and the flowers which are bisexual are borne in terminal or axillary inflorescences.
The family to which the genus belongs is the Loganiaceae, a fairly large family of trees, shrubs and climbers, comprising approximately 600 species in 29 genera, spread across various temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of the world (Allaby 1998).
Many species belonging to the Loganiaceae contain poisonous alkaloids, perhaps the best known being Strychnos nux-vomica, of Indian origin, from which strychnine is obtained, and the South American Strychnos toxifera which yields curare poison.

 Definition of Loganiaceae from dictionary.net
(Chem.) A very poisonous alkaloid resembling brucine, obtained from various species of plants, especially from species of Loganiace[ae], as from the seeds of the St. Ignatius bean (Strychnos Ignatia) and from nux vomica.
It is obtained as a white crystalline substance, having a very bitter acrid taste, and is employed in medicine (chiefly in the form of the sulphate) as a powerful neurotic stimulant.
