Loggia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A loggia is the focal point in place of a portico in the centre, and used again each side of the structure as a corridor.
Loggia is the name given to an architectural feature, originally of Italian design, which is often a gallery or corridor generally on the ground level, or sometimes higher, on the facade of a building and open to the air on one side, where it is supported by columns or pierced openings in the wall.
Loggias sometimes were given significance in a facade by being surmounted by a pediment.

The "Loggia dei Militi" assumes the layout of the early Lombardy broletto, characterized by two single halls one over the other: the portico at ground level and the chamber above with a windowed roof, both floors being of a rectangular plan.
Under the portal there is preserved the emblem of Cremona (brought here from the Margherita gate, demolished in 1910) composed of the two statues of Hercules, the legendary and mythical founder of the city, holding up the city's coat of arms.

Florence Art Guide - The Loggia dei Lanzi
The Loggia dei Lanzi, built between 1376 and 1382 to house the assemblies of the people and hold public ceremonies like, for example, the swearing into office of the Gonfaloniers and the Priors, stands on the righthand corner of Palazzo Vecchio, where Piazza della Signoria meets the square of the Uffizi.
It was in fact originally called the Loggia della Signoria or "of Orcagna", from the name of the artist who designed it (though it was actually carried out by Benci di Cione and Simone Talenti).
After the construction of the Uffizi, which was built onto the rear of the Loggia, Bernardo Buontalenti transformed the terrace into a sort of hanging garden (1583) from which the princes could watch ceremonies or performances in the square.

The loggia, a covered, open-air terrace across from the Palazzo Vecchio, is home to some of the city's most remarkable public sculptures, largely from the 16th century-Cellini's noble bronze Perseus and Giambologna's spiraling, agitated Rape of the Sabines are two standouts.
It is not only by chance that even the sculpture by Fedi was defined as: four characters and an author to relate the trials and tribunes of the lovely Polissena who fights in her hate and love for the baneful and invulnerable Pirrus who stole her away from a despairing mother and a slain brother.
The Loggia was born to be open to everyone; a marvellous stone umbrella that freely offers shelter from the summer sun and the winter rain - as well as space to contemplate the beauty of Florence.
