The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Logic Will Break Your Heart has enough pretty melodies to take on the likes of Coldplay, but yet there’s an underlying substance that sets them apart.
What’s clear from Logic will break your heart is that The Stills aren’t interested in sophisticated or complex stuff, but what they do offer is fully-committed, direct and straight down the middle hummable rock songs, without ever heading near the Stereophonics-esque meat and potatoes school of guitar.
Logic may well break your heart but it’s fairly safe to say that The Stills probably won’t.

The modern sound of Logic Will Break Your Heart is undoubtedly rooted in post-punk threads of the Cure and the Smiths, but the Stills create something that's partly glamorous and fully imaginative.
One will notice that they're still a young band and bright-eyed in developing a sound that's magical and solid to them.
From the shimmering synth beats of "Ready for It" to Dave Hamelin's surging percussion crash on "Animals and Insects," Logic Will Break Your Heart is posh enough to stand alone.

The debut album 'Logic Will Break Your Heart' offers some absolutely brilliant tracks, enforced so successfully by the beautiful guitar backing from Greg Paquet - Tim Fletcher's voice is nothing special, and if anything a little too depressive, but it complements the general melody well enough and is perfectly inoffensive.
The opener, "Lola Stars and Stripes", is a beatuiful song, highlighting the lack of change in the world since the start of the cold war and impending threat on the world today, while effortlessly blending this with a love song to their muse figure, Lola.
Overall, The Stills offer a huge amount of promise for the future, and while 'Logic Will Break Your Heart' will hardly be their piece de ressistance it's possible to see that from this beginning massive things are possible.

"Logic Will Break Your Heart" represents the conceptualization behind the formation of The Stills.
The theme of "Logic Will Break Your Heart" "represents the general subconscious idea of the title," said Paquet.
The foundation is stabilized by drummer Hamelin who actually wrote 9 of the 12 songs on "Logic Will Break Your Heart." "It makes for an interesting dynamic that Hamelin as the drummer writes them," notes Paquet.

The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart : album review
Heck, they should have released this one - though perhaps the chorus line, "The girl will screw you," is a tad too awkward for a stadium rocking hit single.
Love songs and the all together broody '80s feel aren't the sparks to set your heart racing or head nodding.
You're probably more likely to stick this on as a filler while doing chores or to cheer you up on a journey.

Though the '80s school of melody is most definitely in session (it's swell to hear songs again, isn't it?), the four have also learned extensively from the dense, meandering atmospherics that bands like Coldplay have put to powerful employ.
Still, The Stills are a young band and while Logic Will Break Your Heart is a fantastic pop record, it's not a classic.

Logic Will Break Your Heart is a consistently solid, enjoyable debut, but it suffers from the sameness that has always plagued the frontlines of the garage revival.
Nearly every track on Logic is a collision of trebly, jangling guitars, a sound that borrows heavily from other bands whose names also begin with "T-h-e S-t-".
Despite Logic's few standout moments, it is important to stress that the rest of the album is also good, albeit monotonous.

The Stills: Logic Will Break Your Heart - PopMatters Music Review
And yet: With Logic Will Break Your Heart, a bunch of over-hyped, ridiculously affected (did you hear they stare at the ground in concert a la the early 1990s British shoegazers?) Quebec natives have made the most important album yet about the post-9/11 American zeitgeist.
Logic, their first full-length, succeeds where others have committed only artistically repugnant acts of musical grave robbery because it humanizes the incomprehensible by grounding it in the classic rock 'n' roll trope -- a romantic relationship, complete with its ecstatic highs and heartbreaking lows.
Lacking the arena-sized dynamics that characterize the rest of Logic, this cut and a remixed version appeared on the group's June 2003 EP Rememberese, which started all the "retro" comparisons in the first place.

Garbled Communications: Live Review: The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart
“Logic Will Break Your Heart” essentially fills in one of the few remaining gaps in a New York scene increasingly self-referential to its own history.
Indeed, “Logic Will Break Your Heart” fails to sustain enough variation in songwriting to accredit it with anything like the definition of ‘great’, but there is a sense that the polished over-production ebbs away at the soul and emotion evident, musically in places, but consistent in the lyrics.
City music influenced by a country songwriting heritage, or contemporary country-rock gone quite definitely to its most urban, “Logic Will Break Your Heart” isn’t going to win any awards for innovation, but deep down, in such disinfected musical times, there remains the hope that they they might actually really mean it.

The Stills' excellent debut album, Logic Will Break Your Heart, is a stunner, a rush of shoegazer guitars and suave lover-boy angst.
Logic Will Break Your Heart serves up likable songs in the mode of mid-'80s Britpop, alongside atmospheric ballads in the mode of just about every post-Coldplay European rock band.
But all too often "Logic" just melts together with songs that sound exactly the same, particularly in the middle third of the album.

 Vagueness
I will conclude with the issue of whether all vagueness is linguistic.
Disappointingly, the proponent of many-valued logic cannot trace the increase of assertibility to an increase the degree of truth.
Thus the logic of vagueness is a logic for equivocators.

So many people have torn this album apart that it hurts … me that is. I had nothing to do with the making of the album and yet, I was saddened by some of the poor reviews received (there have been just as many positive reviews as negative reviews, if not more).
So while logic may break your heart, The Stills will ease the pain.

The Stills have always shown promise, but Logic Will Break Your Heart ascends far beyond anyone's wildest expectations; they've shot a hole in the moon, and the torrents of lunar loveliness that seep from its open wound have bathed their tunes in a luminous transcendence that a thousand Robert Smith clones couldn't duplicate.
While we've all heard the album's recurring themes of death, loneliness and love before, the steely conviction with which The Stills deliver is as rare as a visit from Halley's Comet.
Logic Will Break Your Heart is a pop record, albeit a fascinatingly warped one that often sounds too surreal to be true.

Debut album from the Montreal four piece, 'Logic Will Break Your Heart' soars, banks and sweeps like the pilot of a light aircraft after a big ol' peyote sandwich.
Proving that the history of pop culture is, if not circle, then at least oval, 'Logic Will Break Your Heart' eschews the '70s heyday of garage rock (seemingly the default playbook for young men with guitars right now) in favour of a quick trip back to the sweeping jangle of showgazing-era Blur, and the like.
It's not all daffadils in the back pocket, obviously, but the wavering vocal and slowly soaring guitar lines of 'Changes Are No Good' will certainly strike a chord among North London residents of the early nineties, even if they don't recognise the sparkle and polish of the production.
