Kenneth Burke on Rhetoric, pt. 2
Logology is the study of theological terms for the insight they produce into language.
Logology is intended to discover the fundamental truths about nature and forms of language as a motive.
Logology can be viewed as a theory and methodology about words at a higher level of generalization than that of dramatism.

Canonical Doubt, Critical Certainty: Counter-Conventions in Augustine and Kenneth Burke | KBJournal
Using what he termed "logology," or "words about words," Burke can be read as a kind of linguistic theologian, whose particular evangelism seeks conversions not of souls but of terminologies and social transactions.
But for that reason logology is fascinated by the genius of theology; and all the more because, through so much of our past, theologians have been among the profoundest of our inventors in the way of symbolic action.
Logology, like religion, can be viewed as "central" to all disciplines and "specializations" of study "in the sense that all -ologies and -ographies are guided by the verbal" (26).

In 1965, Dmitri Borgmann resurrected an old word, logology, and gave it a new meaning of recreational letter play.
Logology encompasses two five-letter anchored palindromes - logol and golog - and repeats the cluster log.
If you assign a value of 1 to the letter a, 2 to b, and continue up to 26 for z, logology averages 13.5, the perfect midpoint of the alphabet.

Accordingly, I could clarify "logology," or words about words, by listing several of its key components, many of which are "borrowed back" from theology.
In the interview by Harry Chapin in the early seventies Burke mentions his profound fear of death (much stronger when he was younger than at that time when he was in his mid-seventies).
But it was a letter to Cowley, not the essays or the Chapin film, that first gave me this notion of logology as a psychic cure for the fear of death.

In honour of the passing of the great "twice nightly" Richard Whiteley, I propose an academic chair of logology so that his excellent work on standards of spelling can be continued after his passing.
Can't believe that this British institution is no more.
He was famously not blown up in the Grand Hotel, Brighton in 1984 although he was standing in the hotel bar at the time.

 Particularities and Universals
Coming from scepticism, the theory of language as logology is one meta-theory in philosophy, where science, religion and art can start innovative and creative dialogue.
Burke’s logology certainly is an early effort to deal with the fifth thought form of meta-cognition in the discipline of philosophy and linguistics.
Even when –as logology in the philosophy of Burke- theatre shows the rather pessimistic situation of modern anonymity, there is from time to time something utopian one could call ”hoping against what is before one’s eyes”.

 On Human Nature
Burke, author of Language as Symbolic Action, A Grammar of Motives, and Rhetoric of Motives, among other works, was an innovative and original thinker who worked at the intersection of sociology, psychology, literary theory, and semiotics.
This book, a selection of fourteen representative pieces of his productive later years, addresses many important themes Burke tackled throughout his career such as logology (his attempt to find a universal language theory and methodology), technology, and ecology.
