According to the North East Frontier, areas (Administration) Regulation 1954, the North-East Frontier Tract came to be known as North-East Frontier Agency and the Mishmi Hills District was renamed as the Lohit Frontier Division.
In 1965, under the North-East Frontier Agency (Administration) Regulation, 1956 the Lohit Frontier Division came to be known by its present name the Lohit District and the Political Officer and Additional Political Officer were redesignated as the Deputy Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner respectively.
The District headquarters of the Lohit District is at Tezu.

Itanagar, June 2 (PTI): High alert has been sounded in Tezu sadar circle of Arunachal Pradesh's Lohit district as incessant monsoon rains lashed the State during the last five days sending all major rivers and their tributaries into full spate and cutting off Hayuliang in Anjaw district from the rest of the country.
Deputy commissioner of the two districts P S Lokhande said the rains have disrupted life in Lohit and Anjaw districts and Tezu recorded 478 mm of rainfall.
In Lohit district, low lying areas were inundated, while River Barrang was flowing above the danger mark in Chongkham circle and has flooded paddy fields.

They do not have ST status, so they are deprived of all those facilities which are provided to the Mishing tribe of East Siang and Lower Divang Valley districts.
