In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

Lojze Peterle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lojze Peterle (born 5 July 1948) is a Slovenian politician and diplomat.
Peterle served as deputy prime minister and foreign minister from January 1993 until October 1994.
Tensions were deep in the coalition, however, and Peterle resigned from his posts in 1994 when Drnovšek nominated Jožef Školč, a member of his own Liberal Democratic Party, to be speaker of Parliament, against the wishes of Peterle who believed that a Christian Democrat should be speaker.

Peterle did this on his own initiative, without the approval of the Government and Parliament.
It was because of it that Peterle definitely left the Slovenian foreign political scene.
Because of Peterle's departure (although he had resigned a month before Aquileia, but had continued to discharge the office of Foreign Minister) the Christian-Democrats are giving serious thought to leaving the "big coalition" in the Government of Janez Drnovsek - but it is public knowledge that they are not undivided on that score.

1994/09/28 18:16 IN COMES SKOLC, OUT GOES PETERLE
Lojze Peterle's views were much the same and the main reason why immediately after Skloc's election for Speaker he resigned from the office of minister of foreign affairs and Vice-Premier.
Peterle, much like Jansa, reproached Skloc for his communist past,an absurd accusation, since precisely Skloc as the president of the then youth organization, which initiated all the democratization processes, was together with his collegues among the most ardent opponents of the League of Communists.
Up to now Peterle had no intention of going along with Jansa and other ultra nationalist, or even in some aspects, fascist parties. However, it is quite possible that in spite of Peterle's resignation his collegues would remain in the coalition.
