The song was 'Lola', the subject matter was the protagonist's brief acquaintance and flirt with a travestite, the melody was incredibly involving and memorable, the bombastic chorus ('lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-Lola') became the Kinks' arena signature, and the single was one of their biggest international smashes, reinstating them as major artists in the USA as well.
Not that this particular concept is that entertaining, as well; Lola is the far precursor to Ray's childish operas of the mid-Seventies that managed to significantly profanate his reputation as that of one of the most intellectual songwriters of his generation.
Moreover, Lola seems highly hypocritic: even if Ray was an expert in the matter, having gone through a lot of commercial trouble himself, by now the band were forming a part of the musical business themselves, so going out and bashing it on the record was a highly strange thing to do.

Of course, the linchpin to this collection is "Lola," Ray Davies's irresistibly vivid account of the charms of a seductive transvestite.
The Kinks were alwaysone of the most distinctly British of all their contemporaries (this is self-evident on the album "Something Else") but this album found them experimenting with ideas borrowed from American country music as well as Broadway.
Ray Davies' humour in songs such as "Apeman," "Lola," "Top of the Pops" and "Denmark Street" lightens up the serious message of the album, which is a criticism of the corruption of any kind of business, the music business included.

The Kinks: the kinks, kinks song, kinks album
This was due in large part to Davies' and the band's fierce creative independence and a disdain for popular music trends, particularly between the late 1960's and the mid 1970's.
Released in the fall of 1970, Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One was their most successful record since the mid-'60s in both the U.S. and U.K., helping the band become concert favorites in the U.S. In 1971 the band released Percy, a soundtrack album to a film of the same name.
It is generally regarded as a lessor Kinks effort, and the band's US label Reprise declined to release it in America, precipitating a major dispute that contrubuted to the band's departure from that label.

For the better part of a decade, Davies has focused on documenting his life, using a variety of approaches to do so.
Davies, for his part, doesn't get too exercised about the oversight: "Q is such a fashion-victim magazine -- and I did write 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion,' and maybe they took offense to that." He laughs.
But 1970's "Lola," from the wry music-industry satire Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, changed all that.

In 1948, Edward Wallerstein, the president of Columbia Records, demonstrated a long playing record developed by Peter Goldmark of CBS Laboratories.
The microgroove record played at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute, in contrast to the standard 78 rpm, and could contain a maximum of 23 minutes of music a side, versus the approximately three minutes that could squeezed on to a 78.
Columbia offered to share its technology with its main competitor, RCA Victor, but RCA decided to market its own version of the microgroove record - one that played at 45 rpm.

Ray is so strapped for ideas that he even includes a pathetic instrumental re-recording of "Lola." There are a couple of characteristically clever efforts ("Animals In The Zoo"), but mostly the band just shuffles along, frequently to the accompaniment of a nauseatingly tacky orchestra.
Meanwhile, the live material is largely drawn from the past two albums, with a brief instrumental "Lola" thrown in at the end as if to prove that Davies didn't give a damn about commercial success.
The rambling, autobiographical title track was cut in the studio, but the rest features crisp but often longwinded life performances that are lifted up by Ray's mischievous banter with the audience.
