  Lolita (1962)
Lolita (1962) was Stanley Kubrick's sixth film - a brilliant, sly adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's celebrated yet controversially-infamous 1955 novel of a middle-aged man's unusual, doomed sexual passion/obsession for a precocious, seductive "nymphet" girl.
The fl humor and dramatic story of juvenile temptation and perverse, late-flowering lust was centered on a pubescent nymphet and a mature literature professor in an aura of incest.
The plot of the filmed version of Lolita transposes the events in the epilogue of the novel (a bizarre death scene) to the prologue.

 Lolita (1962) - Movie Review
When a character's name enters the language as a general descriptor of a similar person, you know you're dealing with a classic.
Lolita is exactly that film -- and the story of one man's obsession with his stepdaughter is so well-known it scarcely requires explanation.
While it's far too long at over 2 1/2 hours, these characters are so juicy and delicately balanced (this was 1962 and pedophilia was hardly accepted on film) they're a true must-see.

 Lolita: New Kubrick Collection (1962)
She was 16 in the movie and looked rather well-developed, so it wasn’t like Humbert pursues a physical child, though Lolita seemed rather immature in other ways.
She was very good when Lolita needed to be a little monster, but she couldn't pull off the more seductive aspects of the role; she always seemed like a brat.
The movie itself appeared quite compelling and provocative, and it’s a piece that should endure repeated viewings and remain thought-provoking and fascinating.

Nabokov later published it as "Lolita: A Screenplay." The unused screenplay featured an Alfred Hitchcock-like cameo for Nabokov, who is referred to as "that nut with a butterfly net" (Nabokov was well known as an amateur lepidopterist).

The three central characters of the novel are all portrayed more than adequately in the film; James Mason as the smitten professor, Shelley Winters as the suburban widow with pretensions of culture and Sue Lyons as the young nymphet.

That they have feelings and obsessions we can identify with is horrifying, but it illustrates a harsh point: take one piece out of a healthy, well-adjusted individual and replace it with something warped and twisted, and the whole picture turns ugly.
Stanley Kubrick filmed an adaptation of the novel in 1962, using a screenplay Nabokov himself wrote.
It can't be more faithful by much: the two films are close to identical in story and structure, the only big difference being Peter Sellers' bizarrely entertaining but distracting left-field portrayal of a minor character.

Instead, Kubrick and Nabokov's Lolita is a precocious manipulator - awakening to her sexual identity and the strange power she can exert over members of the opposite sex.
Compare that to sanctimonious pap like American Beauty, a film that nearly demands that we "understand" its main character, even daring suggest that disapproving of his infatuation with a teenaged girl is akin to the homophobic excesses of his sadistic, one-dimensional ex-Marine neighbor (apparently ugly stereotypes are perfectly OK when applied to conservatives).

For one, although Lolita may be underage in the legal sense, she is not a child.
Though she indulges in the usual teenage poutiness and apathy, and carries some of her mother's traits (like being outspoken on subjects that she is ignorant of), Sue Lyon looks mature beyond her years (if slightly) and carries the character with that distinctly feminine aura of mystique and playful seductiveness.

Stanley Kubrick's 1961 version of Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov's notorious 1953 novel, prompted a scandal in its day: even to address the issue of paedophilia on screen was deemed to be as perverted as the hapless protagonist Humbert Humbert.

Peter Sellers rescues the film with his portrayal of Quilty, a man equally obsessed with Lolita as Humbert is. His pretending to be a psychologist is reminiscent of Dr Strangelove and his portrayal of a policeman is a master class in conveying bumbling, nervous exitement.

In 1968, 40-year-old director Stanley Kubrick had the cinematic world at his feet and one big movie project germinating in his head.
He had started his career as the original independent filmmaker, at a time where it was nigh impossible to make movies outside the studios, and through the previous 15 years he had directed eight films -- some of the most acclaimed, debated and controversial ever made.
"Spartacus" (1960), "Lolita" (1962) and "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964) clearly demonstrated Kubrick's ability to use pitch-fl humor and great spectacle to tell tales of the true heart of man as few filmmakers had told them before.
